Best gun for hunting/ long range?

Looking for insight for a good deer/ long range shooting setup. Looking for decent priced ammo aswell.

Pretty wide open question , Sir.
I would suggest you be more specific as to the actual distances and type of shooting / hunting you wish to do .
Quick answer though, would be something in a 308 sized case head and holding about 40- 48 grains of powder in anything from a .243 to a
.30 caliber size.

Shooting long range and hunting long range are two completely different things, anyone who needs to ask is obviously not experienced enough in either and should consider 300 yards as a limit when hunting, and for this something like 6.5 creed, .308 or 7-08 is a good choice.

"Hunting" and "Long range" are two very different topics, unless they aren't, which depends on the particular circumstances, and anyway - engaging in an activity which combines the two simultaneously is not for beginners. Don't be duped by marketing hype and fashion. Choosing to shoot at animals at any distance should depend on your ability to make an ethical, clean kill shot. Start with the basics. Save your cheap ammo purchases for practise at normal ranges. You'll need it.

Look for something with a stock with a bedding block like an HS Precision, the old Rem 700 LTR’s would be a good entry into a long range target rifle that’s light enough to use for hunting. They are plenty accurate enough to do both things, the fact that it has a field stock and not a chassis makes it more hunting friendly.

If the OP can define his terms a little..... advice would be easier to provide.
I'll say this though.
When I was aspiring to become a hunter I had many misconceptions that I had to work out.
Once I figured a few things out , "long range" became a matter of what caliber and bullet retains enough speed and energy out to the distances I feel comfortable shooting out to.
So long range in a hunting application for my shooting skills , where I felt comfortable shooting out to, was and still is that 300 to 450 yard zone.
To retain the speed and terminal performance/ft pounds of energy at target I chose the 7mm rem mag which incidentally, with the right rifle can also be used to shoot longe range off the bench out to 1000 yards and beyond.
The caliber in a good bullet selection and you can hunt any medium to large game on the continent.
The only downside is the cost of the ammunition.
I personally shoot a Ruger M77 MKII.

Now for ammo availlability and only seeking long range calibers for hunting applications , the 30-06 would be a decent choice as well.
both calibers are very common and are usually availlable in some form at stores that sell ammo , wherever you may travel.

but ya..... a hunting rifle that also doubles as a long range "target" shooter....... 7mm rem mag and whatever rifle fits you the best.

He seems to be a new shooter, so my guess is that he looking to shoot deer at the regular range of like 100yds and during the summer, go out and shoot paper/steel at longer ranges.

I agree on the Tikka suggestion, don't waste your time with anything else.: Tikka T3X, stainless, chambered for .308 Win 150-167 grain rounds. The scope is up to you, I have a Vortex Diamondback and it handles the bc wet weather pretty well. But a scope is very personal. Unless you have put serious time in at the range, I wouldn't be hunting past 150 yards.

Long range- I have access to. 1000 yard range, and as for hunting, sky is the limit. 10 yards, 200 yards, I'm not going to shoot at an animal unless I'm 100% positive it's going to be a good shot. I'm not absolutely new to shooting and hunting, I have experience, but definitely limited. I've since got myself a Ruger American hunter with the magpul chassis, in .308, and topped it with an arken ep5.

Best advice I can give you is towatch the club calendar and when the long range is open, make a point of getting on it and ask the experienced hunters and shooters lots of questions , all your questions will be answered far better than on here, because you will be able to assess better .

Appreciate the advice! My career also exposes me to alot of people required to have military service from many places around the world. Have gone to the range with a friend and had snap caps hidden in the tube of a shotgun and learnt alot about flinch I didn't even know existed. I'm definitely open to 100% of advice that could help , or even hinder. I was punching holes through holes with this Ruger at 200 yards with a more than questionable dirt cheap riton sope, and the cheapest $40 ammo, not properly leveled sight, so it can honestly only get better.
