Hey there, I’m new to hunting and recently got my hunting licence and hopefully will be going for turkey this spring. I’m wondering whats the best type of gun (and or specific brand) for small game, turkey and duck hunting. Hoping someone might have some insight on a good “do it all” gun. My thoughts so far is getting 20 gauge but I’ll take any tips and info. Thanks in advanced!

While you can go with a 20 gauge, it will surely get it done I would recommend going with a 12 gauge simply due to ammo availability. For $1500 you should be able to find yourself a nice Beretta xtrema 2 or even find the right deal on an A400.

firstly, small game, turkey and duck hunting are not the same firearm.

You have lots of wonderful learning in front of you. Enjoy every moment because you will soon be old and regret not having enough of it.

I believe it and Thanks I’m looking forward to it all!

A 20 gauge shotgun will do all that for you, as will a 12. Something with screw-in chokes to accommodate the variety of shooting you plan to do. 12 gauge does have more variety of ammo, but suitable 20 gauge loads can be found... usually...

I started off my adventures into hunting and shooting with a Remington 870 supermag when I was 15. That shotgun claimed many rabbits, grouse & squirrel. Hundreds of ducks, geese and a few deer. I shot my first 25,50,75 & 100 straight in skeet with that shotgun. A shotgun is the absolute best choice for a first hunting firearm.

Ok sweet! Thanks for the reply. I’m guessing for something like grouse you would use a choke obviously for the 12 gauge?

Absolutely. Removable chokes are not mandatory but, they allow you to really target a wide variety of game and to adjust your pattern accordingly. Personally, I would not buy a shotgun without removable chokes.

Thanks a lot man for info!

My dad picked up one of those Mossberg 3 barrel packs in 12g, model 5xx or similar. Comes with a turkey barrel, slug barrel and smooth bore barrel, which I think also came with chokes. That's That's pretty good do all set up until you're ready to start buying individual guns for different hunting, or different guns for days of the week for that matter. Welcome to the club!

Any shotgun what ever flavor you like. I’d stick with 12ga, semiauto,
my pick for budget and good reputation would be Winchester SX4.
If you want a multipurpose, multi species set up? The mossberg 930 3 barrel combo.
If you want high end look to Beretta, Browning, Benelli
Do yourself a favour let the gun pick you…go handle as many as possible mount them to you shoulder, eyes closed. When you open you eyes you should be looking straight down to barrel at the bead. If you have reposition your head, cheek, face etc. that gun does not fit you well, move on to the next make or model.

If you want to google “target focused life” he does great shotgun reviews
Good luck

While I have dedicated guns for each small game, turkey and waterfowl, there's no reason a beginner can't do all 3 with a single gun. In a pump, perhaps an 870. In a semi, I'd look at a Franchi Affinity.

I have a 1997 build M87 Ithaca Turkeyslayer, removeable barrel, removeable chokes 12 gauge 3inch magnum, 23 inches of barrel.
If I could only have one shotgun this would be it.
Four different chokes, one of which is for steel.
Matthew cam paint scheme??
