Best gun lube for an M305 and why?

Ok that makes sense. It seems that the bolt design is quite open so I was thinking if I used oil it would get in my face and all over the scope. Grease it is, thanks for the quick responses.
 
If you bought your m305 new its worth it to read the owners manual completely. Like the guys have said it likes a little grease and the gas system and piston should be cleaned but not lubed per say. It runs pretty much dry. Also full/complete disassembly should be kept to a minimum, I only disassemble for a yearly deep clean, for repairs if needed, to install new parts or if theres some type of problem that would require it. Other than the yearly I have found a good wipe down to everywhere I can reach, grease where needed and a little bore cleaner followed by a couple runs with the bore snake and shes good to go. I have had mine for a few years now and have had no real problems. Also the bore is still great and I have not had to clean it deeply yet, just my few bore snake run throughs after shooting. I think they are good rifles myself and fun to shoot. Lots of parts and accessories for them to, its a great platform really.
 
I use all weather dirt bike chain grease. Reason it sticks to it works well under high tempratures and sticks like glue. 1 year of shooting it's still greased nicely...
 
I used to use white lithium grease, but I found it would make the rifle short stroke and malfunction in winter on really cold range days.
Someone I know suggested snowmobile grease. Works great all year round.
 
I use the Lubriplate white Lithium grease shown. It is the M14 spec lube for US Army. Any decent grease should work. Apply it carefully. We don't want it in the chamber or on the firing pin. I got this small can from a guy on ebay for $15 under an M1A search I had. It should last the rest of my life.

Permatec, Ultra Slick, Extreme Sport, Synthetic grease. 85g tube. My local auto parts guy who was in the industry for decades as a mechanic recommended this for as close a replacement as he knew in his store to duplicate what lubriplate was required for.

Lots of good greases as mentioned above remember it ain't turning 1000 rpm with a 3 ton load applied all the time, the only issue I could see in the way we use our rifles normally is extreme cold properties, say sub -20C. I'm not sure if lubriplate was figured into the late 50's grease requirements for an "All weather, All conditions" grease based partly on its good properties down really low for a grease in it's day circa 1955.
