best hand gun for a newbie?

I'm saying this as someone who loves the 1911. I don't have many handguns, but two of them are 1911s and I don't currently own any Glocks or other polymer pistols. Aside from the look, I love the way a 1911 feels in the hand and the trigger pull. Anyway, unless you have a specific attachment to the 1911, I'd recommend a modern design for your first 9 mm. 1911s are a bit more complicated to operate and they are finicky to disassemble. It's not hard to learn, but Glocks and similar polymer, striker fired pistols are just dead simple to operate, and take down and clean. Also, lower end 1911s can be hit and miss on reliability: sometimes you can luck out with a good one, sometimes not. But pretty much any 9 mm polymer pistol is going to be very reliable.
I totally agree with the others that a 22 is an excellent choice, such as the Ruger Mk IV (stupidly easy to dissemble, BTW), Browning Buckmark or Smith Victory. If you want to have more variety, a 22 revolver is also a good choice.
The shadow 2 is a lot like the shadow 1 but just a little better in a few aspects. It has a bit better grip, a bit better mag release, a bit better trigger, a bit better sight radius, a bit less recoil and a bit more weight. If your just plinking or you’re into IDPA go Shadow 1. If you’re into IPSC or just like the shadow 2 better then go shadow 2. Or do what I did and get both.

Bersa Thunder Pro 9 if you want a 9mm. Reasonable price and probably the easiest gun to field strip and maintain. Otherwise a 22 would be the best bet for a first handgun. Personally I started with 22 revolvers.
