Once the shooting session with the 22 Mauser rifle was over, out came the Colt Model 357 sixgun.
One day, just for sh@ts and giggles, I took a two hand supported, offhand shots at a broken piece of stick lumber (about 3 x 7 inches) lying in the soft mud down range.
More often than not, the target was struck at 55 yards, no problem with this revolver and magnum loads.
Once other persons eyewitnessed the accuracy capability of this old Colt, it always gathered attention to itself.
PS: I am not just a Colt fan BTW, my S&W favorite is presently a Model 624.
The smiths easily outnumber the colts in my safe.
When I was shooting much more rimfire cartridges than now, I would always bring, at least one centrefire revolver to the outdoor range down east.

We were, however, able to test the Five-seveN by shooting into bare gelatin, gelatin covered with the FBI's standard "heavy clothing" and finally covered with IIA soft body armor.
"For someone accustomed to full metal jacket bullets zipping through several feet of gelatin, the 5.7x28 was an eye-opener. We first fired at bare 10 percent gelatin and I fully expected the bullet to penetrate the entire length of the 12" block. It did not. Instead the bullet came to rest 7.75" into the block, but it had tracked upward about 2.5" from the point of entry. The permanent wound cavity was 2.75" in diameter.
When FBI standard heavy clothing (t-shirt, flannel shirt, down filled denim jacket) was put in front of the block, penetration was 9" in a straight line, but the permanent cavity was exactly the same.
The final test put a panel of threat level IIA kevlar in front of the block. This time penetration was 6", but there was no measurable difference in the permanent wound cavity.
There will be some who wonder if this is enough penetration. This is a real good question and one for which there is no "right" answer. The FBI insists on a minimum of 12" penetration. When you talk about customary handgun velocities, penetration is needed to get adequate tissue damage, however, the 5.7's velocity levels are into the rifle category where hydrostatic force becomes a significant part of the wounding process."

Whats the best gun ? The one you shoot small groups with..
The gun will not make you a better shooter! While you may have a preference to grip and feel, you will never out shoot the gun, at best you equal its capabilities.
I have a rattling Colt model 80 and a Kimber custom, I shoot the same groups with both, maybe a bit tighter with the Kimber, but nothing to write home about.
Its the shooter who wins the match, the tool in large is accidental!
Buy any reasonable quality gun, either Glock, HK, CZ etc etc etc, invest in time and training and that will pay greater dividends than buying that super custom 3k job...
I ran IPSC with an HK and did well!

Sorry to say this but...
The guys who sleep with loaded guns, round chambered and the safety off kind of creep me out. Seriously.
I love guns, always have, but I can never see myself being that paranoid. Shotgun in the closet. Cool.
Pistol in the drawer, fine.
On the night stand, Cocked, loaded and safety off... I dunno seems a bit much.
If you need that to feel safe, I think you need to move or check your meds.
You're in good company.
There's lots of people out there who say folks just like you creep them out and you need to move or have your meds checked.
They too think they know how you should live your life, the relative risks involving firearms, etc.
The only difference is you all draw that line at what people should and shouldn't be doing in slightly different places.
Why is it so hard for people to adopt the position that people should be held responsible for what they DO or the results of their actions - rather than expecting them to live their lives in a manner that coincides with what we personally feel is appropriate?
Not hard to see how the nanny state never seems to have a problem finding recruits.
