I shoot skeet a bit with my friends, but I don't get out too much so my 870Marine Magnum is usually stuck at home with the title of HD gun.

What's a good shell for HD without too much recoil?

oh. 2nd question. the XCS has a shell holder stock. Can you leave shells in there or is that considered "loaded"?

Thanks!
Allan!

what is HD? and you can't legally store a firearm where there is direct access to ammunition, it must be "separate" or both must be in a safe.

you can legally store a firearm and ammo in the same safe.

what's stopping you from unlocking the safe and grabbing the gun and a few shells if you hear a broken window and a few voices downstairs in the middle of the night?

AND ONE OF MY GUN SAFES LOOKS LIKE A NIGHT TABLE,BESIDE MY BED. DON't LET YOU KNOW WHO (from sask.) TELL YOU ITS AGAINST THE LAW TO HAVE A SAFE THAT LOOKS LIKE A NIGHT TABLE!!!!! CHEERS POPS

As far as personal/home defence ammo choice goes, I
m not going to start that one again. Choose either slugs or buckshot as you prefer.

I'm pretty sure that you can purchase "Managed Recoil" type "tactical" ammo in at least one or two flavour. Check out Winchester/Federal/Remington's sites.

Oh...one thing that I will add. Without starting the inevitable sh&tstorm over ammo type choices for lethality/overpenetration/accuracy/yaddayadda...

In general, buckshot will have less recoil than an equivalent slug.

2 3/4" BB for zombies inside your home or apartment; that's as light as you'd go.
3" Slugs if you are worried about bears and the like; again that's as light as you'd want to go :)

EnjoY!

# 4 buck will work very well close up for HD,it's also small enough that it shouldn't go through a bunch of walls. Will it stop mad dogs from eating you, definitely.!! Lead BB shot will also work as will # 4 birdshot.
With any intruders in your house and adrenaline going you're unlikely to feel recoil so managed recoil ammo won't be an issue.
