the best hunting caliber and gun that you could possibly shoot is the one that you like.don't get a gun and cal because it's your friends favorite.my buddy loves the .308 and i love the .300 ultra mag. and there is no way either one of us is going to convince the other that one is better than the other.get something that you feel comfortable and can shoot right with and forget wondering about what everybody else is shooting.BULLET PLACEMENT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT.

:) .338 mag then 7x57 Mauser...................

I tend to use the 7 x 57 on most big game, with the .338 Win Mag reserved for elk or areas where grizzly bears might be encountered. :) So, my recommendation for "best all around hunting caliber" would be the good old 7 x 57 Mauser.

.280 Remington

Loaded with 140 grain Ballistic Tip, it is an ultra-long-range slayer par excellence, and does devastating work on antelope, sheep, bear and deer. Loaded with 160 grain Nosler Partition or Accubond, it is also an authoritative moose and elk killer. It will shoot flatter than the 30-06 and it will deliver more striking energy at long range than the .270. It is in short, the ultimate.

Is there a question hidden in this statement? :)

Much as i love the 30-30, the 308 is closer to an all rounder.
The 30-06... sucks. :)

I refuse to ever own a 30-06.
308 will do.

300Ultramag is a big pile of BS.

if you want something without the name ultra in it (wich is ghey) get a 30-378 Weatherby.

If you want something bigger, get a 338 Lapua.
I don't see the purpose of such a round as ultramag If you want really long range, get something bigger... if you want something that you can hunt @ long ranges with, a sporter bbl will not do, so it's useless /.

What does the

....25-06 Remington

....270 Win

....280 Rem

....243 Win

....308 Win

....35 Whelan

....260 Remington

....7mm-08

All have in common? They all stem from a 30-06 case.

100 years and still sucking strong.

I will agree with you to some extent except that claiming that the 308 comes directily from the 30-06 could be debatable. The 308 was developed by the US Army experimenting with the dimensions of the 30-06 case in the late 1940s. The only similarity between the 30-06 case and the 308 one is the diameter of the base of the shell and the diameter of the bullet.

The direct association with modern calibers is basically as follows:

The 25-06, 270, 280, 35 Whelen evolved directly from the 30-06.

The 260, 243, 7mm-08, 358 evolved directly from the 308.

But the question remains, is for example the 30-06 better than the 35 Whelen. It would depend on the application. The 30-06 is a good compromise but if you are a serious hunter, you will probably choose calibers for specific applications. Personally, I would never use a 30-06 if a 35 Whelen was available and the same thing goes for the 308 and 358 Winchester (I prefer heavier bullets).

This debate could go on forever without complete agreement, and as a result, we have wider and wider selections of calibers available in the various firearms sold today. This is not that bad as it leads to a lot of firearms users doing a bit of research in their caliber selection.
