u sure the 243win ,260rem,308 win 7mm-08 come from the 30-06 case thought they were all made off the 308 case?

Your are correct. The cartridges that you mentioned originate from a .308 casing. However, the .308 Win originated from a 30-06 case. They all share a proud lineage.

I am not knocking any cartridge here. The all serve there specific application. and have a loyal following.

And could it not be argued that the the 30/06 originated from the 8x57 [circa 1888]?

In the latest edition of Rifle Shooter magazine there is an article simply titled ".308 Winchester". The author states that the .308 is a modified version of the .300 Savage not the .30-06. Although it was .30-06 performance they were trying to achieve.

Not that it matters for the purpose of this thread.

OK if it is just bullet placement, I have a 2506 that is deadly, if it is bullet placement and horsepower I also have a 416 Rigby that will shoot 1/2 MOA all day. What about low report and richocette then it is 17 HMR. Too many little niche's to put just one rifle in....

As long as it is a Short Mag.... it is without a doubt the best hunting caliber period. If your buddy don't have one... well it sucks to be him.
I'm serious....

& the 300s is a modified version of the 30-06!

Supercub has it right..."And could it not be argued that the the 30/06 originated from the 8x57 [circa 1888]?"

Not that I can remember back then :D

Best hunting calibre... period???

During the period when gophers are out, it's a 22CF.

During the period when I'm hunting deer, it's a medium bore.

During the period of 'scared of bears' it's a 45/70...

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I don't think you can top the 375 as the greatest hunting cartridge. If ther is such a thing as an 'all arounder' then it must truly be good for ALL game, and that starts at the 375. Smaller cartridges need not apply.

However, it's my personal opinion that the 'all around' cartridge concept is a fallacy, an evil evil and potentially dangerous myth. If there IS an 'all arounder' then why do you need more than one gun? BS. If I'm elk or moose hunting, then I'll pick something different than if I'm going after white tails, and again for coyotes, birds, gophers, bear, etc etc. All an 'all around' cartridge is is one that's a compromise in every field. Compromise is bad.

Best fo the average Joe.

308 or 30-06
BECAUSE
1-Available in all actions.
2-Very affordable factory ammo everywhere.
3-Best assortment of factory ammo.
4-Great assortment of bullets for the reloader.110gr to 220gr(brass is pretty much free)
5-Plenty used rifles in these cartriges including bargin priced military mausers.
6-Many more reasons I am sure.

I lean a little heavier towards 30-06,but thats just me.

a guy would never be out of place, east or west, with a bolt action 30-06 that weighed under 8 pounds, topped with a good 3-9x40 scope, shooting 180 grain Noslers @ 2750 fps
