Best hunting scope in the $800-900 range

I would definitely nix the idea of AO on a hunting rifle. Parallax won't be a factor on a scope designed for hunting at normal hunting ranges.

Lots of good suggestions for you above. Another brand to look into is Sightron. I now have three of their scopes, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another. You will more than likely save 3-400 over a similar Leupold, customer service through either Mystic or Hirsch Precision is top notch and the Sightron warranty rivals the "gold ring". They do stand behind their product.

either 3-9 or 3.5-10 will cover all you basses. I would say the extra bulk and weight is not really worth bumping your objective up to 50mm. If you buy high quality glass it won't matter all that much. Another brand to consider that has top notch warrenty is vortex, I used a viper on a buddys rifle and really liked it, also excellent glass for the money. One Shot and SFRC both carry vortex
 
Thanks for the responses everyone. I will be looking at 40mm objectives for whatever I decide on.

Seems the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 and Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x40 are in the same price range. I'm thinking I'll be buying the Leupold but am curious to hear how everyone feels they stack up against each other as I'm not committed to anything yet.

The Zeiss runs about $200 less, and it has a very constant eye relief as you change magnification. With the Leupold, the eye relief varies with magnification.
 
And the Zeiss has arguably slightly better glass. The mechanical adjustments on the Zeiss are also reputably excellent, repeatable, and crisp. Leupold has always struggled to accomplish that task, although the VX3 is apparently better than the older stuff.
 
Take a look at the bushnell elite 6500 2.5-16X42 AO. It has the side focus parralax setting (don't really need it, but why not) Overall a very versatile scope with huge magnification range. Quality is excellent, probably good as VX3. goes for 675 new.

Leupold is great, but is overpriced because of the name IMHO.

As somebody mentioned, sightron is awesome (used by many serious target shooters at 1000 yds and beyond)

Minox is worth cheking out, a dealer on here has a good promotion.. search minox in optics EE. They have a life warranty that covers anything, and apparrently they use zeiss glass. company is german, scopes made in USA. Very wide mag. range too
 
Check out Plain Sight Solutions ( Supporting Dealer ) and have a look at the demo and sale prices he is currently advertising for Zeiss and Swarovski scopes. Great chance to purchase a $1500 Swarovski Z3 for around $900 - you would never regret it !
 
I'd like to try a Swaro or Leica but truth be told I don't think that you have to spend that much for great optics. What's the going rate for a 2.5-8x Leupold? That would he my default position for scoping most sporting rifles but it would be nIce to try a big name Euro company to see what they're like.
