I am really interested in a Savage 99 but I know I don't know enough about them to make an informed decision, especially here online. Can anyone recommend a good book on the subject or a (hopefully free) website detailing the model designations and what to look for?

I am not a collector, I just want to own one and take it deer hunting :D

I have looked at that site previously and it is a good reference but I want an overview of the rifle suitable for a total tyro.

If you just want a good overview, any rag will do. It's almost easier to discuss a particular version than the entire line.

If you are not a collector, then there should be sufficient information online and in the forums here on CGN. But if you'd like a book, I highly recommend "The Ninety-Nine: A History of the Savage Model 99 Rifle" by Douglas Murray. It's a great book with everything you need to know about the 99, including lots of information you won't find online.

They are both members of CGN. Take a look at 24hr Campfire - they have a whole forum dedicated to collecting Savages.

I'm around.

Murrays book is a good start but remember it's not the bible of 99's, I've found a few mistakes in that book. If all your after is model designations then ya, it's the thing to get.

hmmm, you look familiar :D I knew there would be some knowledgeable folks out there. Mind if I send you a question now and again?

X2 for Maddog and 99trix. I have read a great many responses from them in various forum chats. Love my 99s and shoot them regular. My very fave is a newish 99c (DM) in 308. Nice carry and lots of thump. She loves 150gr Accubonds.

Listen to this man, if you don't have this book ,your at a disadvantage when looking for differrent model, the book by Murray is a must!:cheers:Dale Z!

Is there a Canadian source for this book? The Savage 99 website links you to Amazon for this book, but the sellers listed won't ship here, for some reason.

Odd. My wife and I get books out of the US all the time. Guess they are making so much money they can ignore 10% of their market. Try Ebay. Also Wholesale sells books as do a lot of other gun sellers. Might like to get a copy myself as I still own a 99C 308 that I am fond of.

I just went to the Savage 99 website which leads to Amazon. Indicates 2 sellers with info on how long it takes to ship International. I can order one right now and have it sent to me. ??

Yes I did that too but when you get to completing your order, you get a message saying "seller can't ship to your location". Try and see if you get the same. And hey, if you buy the book by accident, I'll buy it off you
.....for less of course, it will be a used book :D

Seems strange they would list International rates and then not allow them. I will look into this a little further and may just go ahead and buy the book. Used yes but Imported too so doesnt that double the value?? :)

Bogie,
I did check out wholesale sports like you suggested. No Savage 99 book but I was impressed with what they had in stock. So my search continues for Murray's tome. Let me know when you're done with yours, I've got a $5.00 bill burning a hole in my pocket :D
