Best Lightweight .22

Just got my new volquartsen 10/22. Short carbon wrapped barrel with trijicon iron sights. Super light and I think it'll be a great gun for the woods. I didn't think I would like the magpul hunter stock but I actually like it now that I can feel it in person

I built a heavy barrel Ruger .22 awhile back, I could put 3 bullets in the same hole (at the range with support).

That said in the real world I could not hit a beer can, it was too heavy to free hand with no support.

I would like a accurate light weight .22, who and where can I get one ?

Thanks Jay

Hey Jay~congrats on the new shooter. Looks like the conversation turned to auto-loader-mode pretty quick, but you have what looks like a great gun now. I'm a bolt-gun-guy...so my advice would have been to go that route, but I look forward to hearing about how she shoots.

@Newby. Looks like a nice gun. I'm diggin my new lightweight volquartsen I just got in the mail yesterday. Mine just has a stainless steel receiver and really short carbon wrapped barrel. Nicest autoloaders especially with the threaded in barrel vs the slip fit design

You can't go wrong with a VQ... yours looks to have the TG-2000 trigger group, which is one of my favourite field triggers. I have had half a dozen and they were all quality shooters. The Browning Buck Mark Sporter is another good light/compact offhand option... it backpacks pretty good too.

My rifle was out for some work last Sat. so I used the wife's Mossberg 702 Plinkster at our fall outdoor shoot (freehand); I came home with a second in the scope class with a 42 out of 50 at ranges of 20-40 yards. It comes in at just over 4 lbs. Her's is equipped with a cheap Simons red dot.

From a bench-rest, puts ten shots in a 3/8 hole at 20 yards.

Tax in for the rifle, dovetail adapters and the red dot; under $280.00
Bolt locks open after last shot, and there is a manual bolt lock so you can keep it open without a clip in it (handy for the range).

It is a bit tough to disassemble; a bit tougher to reassemble, but it is covered in the manual and there are videos. Lots of parts.

It's a keeper.

I have heard good things about the Marlin Papoose 70PSS. Very light take-down 22 that comes in a padded case to toss in your backpack. Accurate as well apparently. For me the take down feature is important in a lightweight 22 rifle, for others maybe not so much.
