Best Lightweight Deer Brush Gun

Really, just use what would be considered a "normal" hunting rig. For example, a bolt action in any of probably 50 calibers, common variable dcope set at the lowest power. Say 2-7, 3-9; set at 2 or 3. The so called "brush busting" calibers are a often disproved fallacy.

X2! ..... A "bush" gun is more of a configuration of the rifle than the chambering. Shorter OAL, lightweight with a low powered scope will work fine. Magnums not required.

I get the short rifle idea but the shape that fits your hand at the balance point is what I seem to lean to for handiness. Like the lever gun. I have a 20 ga with slugs that I would trust to 100 yds, carries great but is longer than some would like. I also have a rem7 with a red dot so I can grab it at the balance point. Quite handy too

One thing to note is a bolt adds about 1-3" to the action length. A lever or single shot is much shorter because nothing has to cycle backwards.

Here it is.

Doesn’t get much better than this!

I use a Ruger Ranch 350 Legend. Cloverleaf MOA, 6lbs, 16 inch barrel. 180gr Winchester Super X.
And my 30-30s but damn that Ranch rifle drops them.
Highly underrated. 200yd caliber max.
My whole camp uses them for black bear and deer now.
8lb recoil to boot.

A lever gun actually does have a bolt that moves back a bit; they do tend to have shorter barrels and length of pull.

Why re-invent the wheel with legends and bushmasters; classic lever gun, short barrel in .30-30, .45-70, or if you want to have someting a bit more on the cool side; .444 Marlin.

I find that I have rarely had a chance for a second shot when hunting the tight country I do, so my fast handling, Ruger single shot is perfect for my needs. I have killed more than a few animals at less than 12 yards when hunting.

I bought a ruger hawkeye with a pencil 20” barrel. 5 lbs 10oz before the scope. 30-06. A little heavy on calibre for deer but you could hunt anything with it really.

What do you think is the ideal light weight brush gun for the following:
-whitetail hunting
-lots of walking
-thick bush
-150 yards max shot

IMG_3920.jpg

a 21st century interpretation of the ole thirty thirty, 4 lb 14 oz, add 1 ounce for the shell holder as pictured, then a few more ounces for 9 rounds in the shell holder, 4+1 capacity, 37.5” long, 13.5” lop, 3.0 lb trigger

6.5 Grendel, 123 gr Hornady eld-m factory ammo, 2400 fps, 18.5" barrel, recoil energy around 11.5 ft/lbs, moa

balances just ahead of front action screw, one handed carry is nice with thumb wrapping around top of action up against the green dot sight, and it shoots, it handles like a pistol but still points and holds well, ballistically it can go way further than needed for a bush rig but that's not a bad thing, it's point blank hold and dot size (3.8 moa at that eye relief distance) will allow easy no brain range finding so long as dot fits inside deer kill zone it's inside about 250 yards and it's zero is such the bullet lands inside the dot all the way out to that, just pull the trigger if it fits in the kill zone for the longer shots

solar powered green dot with auto-on and auto-brightness setting, pretty bombproof set up, holosun 507c green

This one is a 20" (30-06) cut down from 22". Makes a perfect bush gun, truck gun, jeep gun. :)

Fast, accurate, handles very well, carry friendly detachable mag, dependable, easy to scope, not overly expensive and not on a list to be banned.

The 30-06 gives it more flexibility for longer shots that may appear.

Love it.
