toronto ugh!
opinions for loads for my garrand ishoot mostly 100to 300 yds and tac rifle would like to stay with ball powders and a inexpensive 150 gns bullet tactical and 168,s for longer distances thanks

I have 2 current favorites

1) 150 grain Hornady FMJBT, pushed by 47.0 grains IMR 4895, overall length
3.290", MV 2,550 fps

2) 145 grain M25 Tracer, pushed by 47.5 grains IMR 4895, overall length
3.290", MV 2,565 fps

at a recent match the Tracer loads were accurate enough to hit a 1 gallon milk jug at 435 meters with iron sights and provided enough juice to knock down steel reactive plates weighing about 50 lbs at 300 meters.

I've personally found 50 grains of Varget pushing a 165 to a 168-grain bullet to be excellent in Garands. Actually, it's a universal .30-06 load that I often use to test the accuracy of a new .30-06 rifle I'm loading for. I've never seen a .30-06 rifle that wouldn't give excellent results with that combination, assuming the rifle, scope and bedding weren't problematic.

There is no one load that will both shoot well and cycle the action. However, Varget, IMR4064 or IMR4895 with either bullet weight and regular large rifle primers will be fine. You do not need CCI #34 "milspec" primers. They're a marketing gimmick.
The 4064 will give you more consistent accuracy with the 168's, out to 600 yards. Past there, a 175 grain match bullet will shoot better.
The latest Hornady(I think it is. I can never remember which book has it) manual has a section with M1 Rifle specific loads too.
The rifle was designed to use .30 M1 ammo with its 174.5 grain bullet at 2640fps. Not .30 M2 ammo with its 152 grain bullet at 2700fps. In 1940, the .30 M2 ammo was increased in muzzle velocity to 2800fps to match the ballistics of the .30 AP ammo.

How did you get my 150 gr loading data???????This is what I loaded for a buddy that has a Garand, same book maybe!!!

I've been shooting the top load with 147 grain Winchester FMJBT for about 7-8 years now. All my loads are trial and error. In the past 13 years I have tried approximately 150 different loads for my Garand. I really like my Garand!!!
