I was wondering what are the most accurate hand loads for this rifle? I have read that the overall length is best at 2.800". Now the million dollar question is...what is the best powder and how much as well as the best bullet and weight to use? Thanks in advance

I'm sure you'll find any of the popular match bullets (Sierra, Hornady, Berger, Lapua) in a weight somewhere between 150 and 180 should shoot excelent. Theres a handfull of powders that will work as well.

If it were my gun... I'd be loading 175 grain sierra match kings into a case full of varget. I like the 168 A-Max too...

There are so many components out there that will work you could easily drive yourself nuts trying all of them. Pick some that you like and can get easily and develop a load that works.

Just went to the range today with my 5R with:

Lapua 167gr Moly Scenars
New Lapua Brass
Benchrest primers
43gr Varget (IIRC, not quite sure off the top of my head but that sounds right)

Seated them right on factory OAL which it loved.

It was awesome, though I wasn't going for groups so much this time as I was punching holes in pennies for fun and zeroing the rifle to where I wanted it.

the groups I did get though at 100yds had 3 rounds all touching.

I also hit a rock at around 800x as well.

Another guy gave me 3 rounds to try with Varget, winchester brass, and 175 SMKs, they also shot bang on.

Remington R5

:) I have the same rifle and have been using for the most part Berger 175g.VLD's . Best powders and weight for me have been 43.5g. of Varget and 38.5g. of IMR 3031. I seat the bullets 20 thou. crush into the rifling. CCI BR-2 primers are best. Groups average about 5/8" at 200m. What is really encouraging is the #'s of 2 and 3 shots in a 3 shot group that make a single hole at 200m. with Varget and 20 thou crushed Berger 175s. Another very good load at 2.8" overall length to feed in the magazine is 180g. Ballistic Tips and 38.5g. of IMR 3031. Good for 3/4" at 200m. Decent performance for a factory rifle. I am using a 24x scope and have replaced the inconsistent pulling Xmark trigger with a rifle Basix 1.25lb trigger.

I've been looking for some good reloads as well. Keep in mind the 168 grain Federal is fairly slow at 2650 FPS. Here are my results with Factory 168 Federal match king ammo:

Federal Gold medal 168 grain Matchkings : FPS: 2650 (From manufacturere website)

Results: 5R milspec rifle 5 round groups at 100 yards. Scope Zeiss Conquest @20x

1) 5 rounds light wind, +15 celsius. .657 edge to edge. .657-.308= .349" or .349 MOA
2) 5 rounds 5-10 Km/h winds +8 celcius. .673 edge to edge. .673-.308= .365" or .365 MOA

I have some HMS ammo as well in 168 that I'm hoping will shrink the groups even more.

For reloading I found this recipe. It's meant to duplicate the Federal Gold.

Federal Gold clone: 168 SMK 43-43.5 grains of IMR-4064

I'll be trying this with CCI BR2 primers, Either Federal or winchester brass and at 2.8 OAL (Which the 5R excels at)

This works best in mine , .175 Gr match king , 43.0 Varget , fed match primer. rem brass trimmed to 2.005 " oal set to 2.8002 " :)

Thank you. I was looking for a 175 grain load to try out. I've had such good results with the off the shelf 168 that I haven't bothered yet. But I know that will change soon as the weather is warming up. Now I just need some days without 30 km/h winds.

Thanks guys...now that i have some proven loads I will get them ready for when the rifle gets here. I can't wait to try it out after all I have read about it.

Rl 15

I expermented with RL 15 as well but the varget loads seemed to have a slight edge at 100 yards , At 300 yards the varget loads out performed the RL 15 , i am invited next weekend to Volks range in Chilliwack so it will be interesting to see how it shoots at 400 / 600 / 800 yards:eek:

Loads for Remington R5

:) You can try our favorite loads but they may not be the best in your rifle. I believe the easiest way to find the best load for your rifle is do a load ladder test with your rifle using the components you prefer to use. Google, Audette's "Ladder" method, if your not sure what a load ladder is. In 10 or 15 rounds you'll have the ideal load for your rifles harmonics. You'll need to shoot at 200 or 300 yds. to be able to see the loads that group together. I use this method everytime I am trying to find the very best load for a rifle.
