Best long distance muzzle loader

The Polisar Brothers of Albuquerque NM, Joe and Steve, got Dave Corbin to make a them a 600gr hexagonal swaging die set. That and 100gr of FFg took down North American bison, in their article in 'Muzzle Blasts' about ten years ago.

I have a load of these now-precious bullets left as I sold my Whitworth to somebody who could use it better than I ever could.

There is no replacement for displacement. Bore size is your friend IMO.
It's like compressed air. 1/4" with 100 psi behind it doesn't mean much. 10" with 100 psi behind it would probably knock down an elephant.
Black powder isn't capable of that much velocity.
On the other hand a big bore throwing a big bullet, say 500 grain is going to be a deadly combination ( rainbow like trajectory of course). I'd imagine that a combo like that would also have a kick like a mule.
Ever heard of small bore BP elephant guns? Of course not, they don't work.
If you want 300 yd power get a serious big bore for big boys.

Of course I agree with what you say, but an interesting fact is that "Karamojo Bell" killed over 1000 Elephants, most of them bulls with his .275 Rigby (7x57 mauser) using 170 to 200 gr fmj bullets.. Not BP but it is most definitely small bore for animal size.:)
Also just a FYI He was hired at the age of 16 by the Ugandan Railway to kill man eating lions with a single shot .303. Awesome man. What an adventurer.:D

There are a TON of selections open to us today.

I bet 99 % of the pedersoli 45 and 50 cal flint and percussion long rifles shoot better then those operating them.

I appreciate the input. I've a 30-40 Krag and I'm waiting to buy it's vanquisher; the 7 x 57 mauser. Great ballistic co-effient, other than a smidge more powder there are no advantages to be had. It's simply a great caliber.
But...IMO, of course...comparing a 7 X 57 to a 50-110 BP is like comparing a chevy 350 to a 5,7 cummins diesel. Not even in the same ballpark. Hell they are not even playing the same game. Horsepower vs torque. It's not even a decent comparrision. No offence of course, but it's not the same.
