I was kind of ho-hum about getting into long range shooting but I am a physics nerd and now I cannot wait to get into the past time.

I have seen a few reviews on the Magpul DVD that say it's great, I already own the shotgun one and I love it!

What book would you recommend for a novice long range shooter though? I cannot seem to find a good review or suggestion anywhere...

THANKS!

Magpul DVDs should only be used as entertainment. Without an actual instructor standing over you, your fooling only yourself.

Get Brian Litz's books. You will find them very useful.

Thank you!

And what's wrong with the Magpul DVDs? I use the drills from the shotgun one all the time, I found it helped me out quite a bit.

The Magpul long range videos are interesting to watch. Pretty much an infomercial for the Horus reticle system.

"The Wind Book for Rifle Shooters" is very much worth having. See w ww.milcun.com.

The Magpul video goes into some basics about using the reticle for holdover and for wind hold-offs, but it doesn't go anywhere with them. They sit there and pretty much just use the reticle for leisurely deliberate shooting in situations where you would be better off dialing. They never demonstrate a situation that shows where using the reticle instead of dialing would be advantageous. In PRS style matches, there are stages where you will only get 1/4 or 1/2 of the possible points if you dial because there just isn't time to. They also don't use the reticle for any kind of advanced shooting like shooting multiple moving targets that are at different distances and going at different speeds. It's a tactical themed video, yet they don't spend hardly any time talking about building stable positions in the field, shooting off of barricades (branches, fences, logs...) and uneven terrain. If you want good videos for that type of shooting, get the training DVDs from Rifles Only.

If you want to know the science, Bryan Litz's books are the place.

Do you video tape yourself while doing the drills? If not, how do you know your doing them correctly? Not trying to take anything away from you. It is very difficult to get stance and holds perfect without someone who knows what they are doing to correct you on the spot. Take a course from a reputable trainer, and you'll see what I mean. The videos can be a good supplement after having proper training.

"Shooting world record groups at 300M" is coming out soon. Supposed to be very well done. I got to read a few chapters " Mixing Poutine Gravy for your trigger finger, the art of the slippery trigger" and " The best rifle in the world should fit in your backpack". I hear it will be out soon, they are just taking care of some spelling errors.

I am in the same boat and want a complete read without getting too nutty with the physics, never been my strong point. Anybody read "Long Range precision rifle" by Anthony cirincione? Apparently good

Write your own book. Fill it with your results. Keep extending the target distance. Set our zero at 300 meters and mark your come-ups from zero all the way to what-ever distance you want to shoot to. Compare that data to a ballistics program and you're pretty much on your way.

This book will tell you just about everything you need to know. She can shoot and is a very nice lady. Her daughters are also world class long range shooters.
