i cant believe that the thread title is 'low cost' and the AR was mentioned![]()
According to one or two of my local fellow Gunnutz, any gun that costs under two grand and that doesn't have $2500 worth of trick "tactical" accessories is beneath consideration.
I have frequently pointed out to these individuals that the gopher will be just as dead, and will not care that he was zapped with a Remchester 3000 XXSSTT SuperBlaster. Also, yes, that AR would be useless to me as a varmint rifle. (Even in Sunny Alberta, stomping across the fields with anything resembling one is bait for a call to the local Gravel Road Cowboy detachment).
The nicest .223 I have shot so far, regardless of price, was a Savage, 26" stainless fluted barrel, plain black synthetic stock, internal storage for 4 rounds. The owner had a mil-dot scope on it, sighted dead-on at 200 yards, one dot down for 300 yards, and one dot up for 100 yards. Don't recall what the scope was, but I know it was worth about twice the price of the rifle. A beautifully utilitarian piece that did the job with no frills.
I guess unless I win the lottery, it will be a Stevens, unless someone with a Savage that they a) don't like or b) are not using feels they can see theirs for something less that 150% of new rifle price.
I suppose something like a 22-250 would do just as well, but I see very little plinking-type bulk ammo for 22-250's on sale....
