I was looking into buying a CLP.
I've seen some guys use Break Free, G96, Balistol, Frog Lube, Mil-Pro 7......etc. Which one do you guys use and prefer but also why?

Thanks

P.S. - I'll be using it on an M&P9 Pro if it makes any difference.

I use a combination of Fluid Film, ATF fluid, even 3 in 1 oil, & Lubriplate white grease, depending on the gun. It all works well in the right applications. I don't see the reason for having firearm related lube products, when most household or industrial products do the very same job. Lubing a gun is no different than lubing any other type of machine or preventing rust.

Same. Seldom seen a real need for boutique 'firearm specific' lubricants. A very light film of Hoppe's, some lithium grease and occasionally, graphite powder, has never given me issues, whatever the condition or environment. But, to each their own.

Magellann Is right. Steel is steel , whether a tractor , shovel or gun. I speak as a mechanic for 40 yrs. & a high volume gun collector
for about the same time . I am talking about keeping the outside rust free mostly . Most people think the container must say ,,,,,, "Gun Stuff"
to put on a gun . Not true . My 40 + yrs. say ,,, not true. When I do buy gun oil I use Hoppes #9 , but losts of other stuff is just as good.

I like to use Ballistol. Like they claim it cleans, lubricates and preserves very well. It's also eco friendly and can be used for a lot of other purposes as well.

Talking lube on any forum is asking for a fight. Go onto a motorcycle forum and ask the same question about motor oil ... I had lunch with the armorer with the RCMP who did the lubrication tests, etc and he told me about all his results in the worst of conditions and so on. Some interesting stuff. All I can say is that the synthetic G96 did exceptionally well. Apparently there is a very fine line between being a good lubricant in harsh conditions - but yet still protecting from rust. I am sure that many of the high end gun lubes work fine. I tend to lean toward synthetic grease because it stays where you put it. I have had no problems in very cold conditions with it either.

Or how to clean and then lube a drive chain. And that applies to either a motorcycle or bicycle forum. It's a great way to stir up a hornet's nest and they ALL rise to the bait.... :d

I'm a big fan of "use whatever you have". At worst it will simply require a little more frequent re-application. I can't imagine anything other than WD40 which won't do the job for at least a while. I'm of a similar opinion that the "boutique CLP's" are more about hype than reality.

I've literally cleaned a gummed up gun using Break Free's particular product. It worked just fine even if it was a bit messy.

Since then I've gone to using mostly the home mixed Ed's Red recipe as my main cleaning solvent (google for the recipe) and then use oil or grease as needed depending on the guns. For slides and over bolts I like using some synthetic boat trailer grease for it's water resistance. We shoot a lot in the rain around here after all. For my BP guns it's Ballistol. And for general lubricating I use either the Ballistol which is right there or the little sample bottle of G96 I've got or the Amsoil synthetic motorcycle engine I've got left over from a bottle that went into the Moto Guzzi. It just depends on which is at the front of the tray of bottles.

The one exception I'd consider as valid was explained to me recently in connection with Frog Lube. If a shooter has issues with odors or skin contact from oils and solvents due to allergies or living in an apartment then Frog Lube with it's minty scent and low or non toxic nature has much to recommend it. But this is due more to the issue of odor or allergy issues than any superior lubricating qualities IMO.

Whatever in the trunk of my car. Some ATF, some 5W30 Syn, Penetrating Fluid ( Deep Creep )Fluid Film, Maybe some grease.

I dont use anything fancy. Depends on the gun is what I use. I got grease on the frame rails of my 1911 but I clean and lube with ATF.

Oil, pretty much any motor oil. Don't waste money on "speciality" gun lubes. Not worth it at all. I use Militec 1 because waaaay back I thought it was the shiznit, and a buddy gave me a couple liters from his agency. I'll never run out of it. but if it vanished I'd just grab some Mobil 1 or something.

Go to Canadian Tire and get a 4L jug of a good full synthetic motor oil and get a tube of a good machining grease. This will last you your whole life. Don't be afraid to "overlube"

Don't even need 4L, a L will last you awhile. The 1/2 L you have from a oil change will last. All I use.
