Best mag pouch

I am wondering what magazine pouches you use and recommend. I haven't used any thus far, as I am new to shooting. I have a 9mm Ruger PCC. Just ordered five Magpul PMAG G17 magazines in addition to the one I have. I am going to start doing dynamic shooting (join IPSC, get Black Badge etc.). They require getting a belt and a set of good mag pouches. I did some search and found tons of different types of those. Some are soft (made of soft or tougher cloth, with velcro, or flex straps, or whatever), some are hard plastic, and some other kinds too.
From your personal experience, what would you recommend for dynamic shooting? My main requirements are: hold mags firmly but allow for very quick pulling when doing a quick mag swap.
Thanks.

You may already know, but the Magpul PMAG G17 magazines aren't magnetic. OEM Glock G17 magazines are magnetic.
With non-magnetic magazines the options are limited to encased magazine holders (using friction to retain).

Inserting a magazine into a friction holder is usually slower than slapping it on a magnet. Upgrading the magazines to steel cased may be appropriate if speed is critical?
Imo for belt use hard case magazine holders are better than soft, and individual rotatable ones are optimal (but take more space).

What else will you run on your belt?

Belts are very personal items to perfect - I wouldn't choose to share my setup because, although it's right my loadout and my skillset, it may be completely wrong for someone else. Experiment and enjoy.

Note - I don't play IPSC or know their sporting rules - I do see contenders regularly dropping "spent" mags on the floor rather than returning to mag holder or tactical use of a dump pouch.

I find the ar semi rigid toccos are really good for the glock mags... super cheap on amazon to boot. They have a tripple that securly holds 6 ... easy to get them out, easy to ramm them back in.

For belt use i have a couple taco singles that are made for pistol mags... suprisly not as fast though....

I have a couple of those elasticated single tacos on a standalone belt clip because they are adjustable up to a double stack 45, which is rare to find on a budget.
But otherwise I would not rate them, the elastic warped, they get snagged, they are physically larger than a hard case single, they have more moving parts to break.

You’ll want something ipsc specific in mind, something that allows you to insert mags fast. So either a hard shell or something magnetic, in ipsc you will start your round differently and a lot of the time mags will be off your belt and on a barrel. You’ll grab mags and put them in your pouches quickly, soft pouches won’t be very fast to load.

Thanks for sharing your experience and advice! Greatly appreciated.
I am fully aware that Magpul PMAG are synthetic (plastic) mags. In terms of magnetic holding it is a downside, definitely. However, the Magpul ones are lighter and much, much cheaper.
That is true that the IPSC folks drop empty mags on the floor. So, one aspect - inserting mags into the pouches is not an issue; it is pulling them quickly that matters. Another aspect - I don't think that Magpuls are so fragile that dropping them on the floor may break them. Also, the "floor" is typically a softer surface.
Thanks again.
Cheers.

Thanks for sharing! Those semi rigid ones might be a good idea. Although double pouches won't work for speed reloading.
I like those leather pistol mags. Unfortunately, they won't work for speed reloading either.

Thank you for your input.
AFAIK, at IPSC practice/competition they mostly pull their full mags and reload the gun quickly. Empty mags are simply ejected and dropped. I don't think putting mags into pouches is an issue. It is pulling them out what matters. But I might be wrong. So far I've only watched a couple videos from IPSC competitions; both about handgun discipline and none on PCC. So I am not familiar with the entire process yet.

For sure, that is all true and this is probably a debate for a different time and place... personally I'm reluctant to train bad habits or treat essential equipment in a disposable way. I was taught that mags should be retained, dump pouch is fast, subsequent tasks instinctive.

Now, if I was regularly runner-up at a top tier IPSC race, had everything else perfect and could only make up the difference by dropping mags on the floor hard and fast ... maybe I'd reprioritise?

Each stage can be different with regards to how the shooter starts, sometimes mags and gun is holstered, other times the mags are out and on a barrel or table, gun can be holstered or on the table. The first ipsc match I watched at my club I realized why the serious guys had the hard and magnetic mag pouches.

Double Alpha Academy, Black scorpion, Ghost, CR Speed, and Bladetech to some extent
Look up their competition magazine pouches and belts.

Double Tap Sports had a decent pick.

Time is part of the game and dropping mags to the floor is quicker then fumbling to pick out an empty Mag and placing it in a bump pouch, and then hunting for a fresh replacement.
So as you press the release a fresh mag should be on the way to replace asap.
DoubleTap is a good choice.

The problem with recommending mag carriers to anyone is that your setup is a personal thing, and you will go thru a few “ setups” before you settle on one. What you run will be based on what you are shooting, and you may have a couple of different setups depending on how far down the rabbit hole you go lol. For example, I shoot IDPA, 2Gun/3Gun, Speed Steel, and have different setups for all of them. I see you are in Vancouver so you have a good choice of events, lots of IPSC which you mentioned interest in, but we also get a lot of Vancouver guys coming out to the Valley to shoot IDPA( no black badge required) Multi gun events, Tactical shotgun etc. I would recommend attending a couple of local events and have a look at what people are running, spectators are always welcome to have a look and tag along with a squad(eye and ear pro mandatory) to check it out. If you have the time, drive out to Chilliwack, Abbotsford or Mission some weekend and check out some events, you are more than welcome in Chilliwack, there are a great core group of shooters that are very willing to give advice. Feel free to pm me for more info if you like. We have events most weekends in Chilliwack, over the next three weekends there is a Tactical Shotgun event, an IDPA and a 2Gun/3Gun event( PCC, Pistol and shotgun). Also the guys at Abbotsford are a wealth of info on IPSC, and great folks

Sure, but there's no single strategy or fixed location for dump pouches. The merits (and disadvantages) vary for each - so if fumbling (placing / hunting for things) it's probably not the best location or strategy for the scenario, and we can switch it. The exact location can't be universally recommended because it depends on the firearm, the discipline, the environment, the shooter. Yes, some combos may be incompatible making the pouch counter productive.

But if the goal is to be tactically resilient for multiple dynamic shooting disciplines (beyond IPSC PCC) then dump pouches have high utility and versatility.

I use a (knockoff AliExpress) Spiritus Systems Microfight Mk5 chest rig for IPSC PCC matches. I made an elastic insert that holds 6 glock mags, but I also like the fellow's idea above of using the rigid esstac (or knockoff) 5.56 fastmag holders.

It is more common to run everything off a belt in IPSC, and that is what I do for pistol competitions where chest rigs are not allowed. However, as of January 2024, IPSC PCC rules do allow magazines in a chest rig so I run one and I enjoy it.

IPSC PCC is a lot of fun, even when you are brand new and very slow like me.

WOW! Chilliwack! Hi neigbour! :d
I will definitely get in touch with you. I haven't done much towards IPSC and BB yet; just recently joined TMSA in Pitt Meadows (haven't even got my member card yet). I will be happy to attend some of the events you guys are running in Abby, Chilliwack and Mission. Will PM you.
Cheers!

Edgy is right. Your best bet for finding out what PCC set up you want to try and run is go and check out a few local matches.
I'm on season 4 and still mess around a bit with mag pouches, pouch position to make mag changes as smooth and quick as possible, and making sure I have enough mags on the belt for some more "robust" shot count stages (trust me, you don't want to have to grab a half full mag out of the dirt to finish a stage ... ).

Everyone I shoot with runs a different set up for PCC. It's a very personal thing getting yours set up just the way it works for you.

Welcome to the PCC club... Enjoy your new addiction.

Oh and most of my rig came from Double tap sports...the double alpha stuff is good. I personally like the ghost 360 mag pouches.
