Best method to hang a steel gong ...

I use an eyelet bent open then hang the gong on it directly, no chains, belts, rope to break off. I use a little angle iron frame and set it on the ground, but I am going to build a little frame that can be ratchet strapped to a tree. To many willows and tall grass around here, need lots of height and trees are it.

I've used eyelets in past, but damned if they didn't get hit from a bullet. I just kept replacing them as they did work.

The thing I found after getting a ricochet in my leg years ago was to make sure plates are angled downward or swinging so as to allow steel cored ammo to ricochet downward.
[Oh yes, that hunk of steel is still in my leg. Lesson learned the hard way]

take pipe the chain will fit inside and cut it into inch long chunks put that over the chain (stacked all the way up), my buddys gong is like this and the pipe is all messed up but the chains are still pretty good theyve been shot lots

I use aircraft cable exactly the same as an ATV winch cable and hang a layer of semi tire infront of the cable. Only ever had one break and it was a 2 minute fix with cable ties cause I leave a few extra feet rolled up behind the gong.

This is the system we use at SPFGA - it involves welding two brackets to the back side (watch the heat does not take out temper)---then install a "hanger"---hung from an upside down L made from grader blades. Bulletproof, but the welds eventually crack after thousands of hits.

I wish I knew how to weld. I was wondering if I could find a super strong magnet and just bolt the magnet onto a 2x4 or something. Thanks for all the input, I will be trying a few of these methods.

Here is how I made mine, they just swing free !! works great

Doesn't count... not AR500 =)

Looks good. My buddy welded up some stands that knock down. The issue being is they are bigger, heavy, and take some setting up. The benefit is they work very well as long as you don't shoot the stand. His are bolted on so the hangers can be replaced. Bolts tend to loosen though.

The other issue is at our public ranges he won't leave it out ther because they would be seen and stolen... sad =(

The odd rat everywhere, I'm prob being unfair to real rats...

If only the gods would randomly blow up crooks during the act. might keep the others in line. It's amazing how low some will go. A guy I use to rock climb with topped out one day and found his bomb proof three anchors were now one not so bomb proof anchor. It's a good thing he didn't catch them in the act, he wasn't a very forgiving guy, I suspect someone would have gotten a flying lesson...

Get a big old tire. Set it on end and hammer a piece or two of rebar through it and into the ground so it can't fall over. Bolt your plate to the inside of the upper edge of the tire (where it would meet the rim). The tire will last longer than your plate.

I used 3/8" cable. The only way you will cut it down is with a direct hit to the crosby clamp and I keep a couple down there in case it happens.
