Best method to remove the spray paint on a rifle?

Varsol works well on most rattle can paints. Its relatively cheap and readily available.

I've used MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) to remove a robust paint from Anodized aluminum. Removed the paint, didn't harm the anodizing. You need respiratory equipment for MEK, the vapors will cause permanent harm.

More paint.

Acetone...

Sand blasting and refinishing

I have used all three, it depends on what your end goal is
Soda blasting would be a lot better option.

You can pick up a cheap sandblasting gun at Princess auto and the use baking soda.

It will remove paint and shouldn’t mess with an anodized or blued finish if done properly.

YMMV but that would be my choice.

Is the OP one of those get the answer types then bug off? Would like to know what they tried and how effective. Not too thrilled with those who ask others to spend time helping them then never return….

For those who wonder if the dot 3 brake fluid works or not... I did this last night. Took 4 hours. You need some plastic trays, dish washing gloves, rags a toothbrush and scrub pad. soak in fluid, rub in then let sit for 30 minutes. Scrub in a bit more and let sit about an hour or so. Scrub it and then let sit some more and you should be able to scrub the remaining paint.

^^This^^

MEK or International Paint's 415 Thinner works. MEK is the go-to for most paint removal. All industrial thinners recommend a decent organic cartridge mask filter as the fumes are nasty. The good bad stuff is usually bad for you.

And... this is why you don't use Acetone, Varathane, paint thinner or MEK. You can actually use Dot3 brake fluid without having to go full hazmat precautions. Plus you don't have to worry about it ruining plastics etc. Hey if you have access to an industrial area then go for it. Most of us are doing this in our homes. Personally I like to avoid fumigating my place or having the neighours think they have a Meth lab next door. I'm funny that way.
