Best milsurp caliber for moose.

I will put in my A-OK for the 303 with 180gr because it is the one that I have experience with.I have personally seen about a dozen moose fall to the 303.I still own three 303's and bring one along as a spare when moose hunting,my first choice is my 30-06.
If you read Jack O'connors idea of the ideal bush gun where bullet deflection is an issue(jack pine timber,spruce bottoms and willow swamps),he says 180gr round nose bullet at about 2400fps is the ticket.Pretty well describes the 303 to a "T" now doesen't it:)
 
I have some Russian commercial ammo in 7.62x54 with Soft Point 203 grain bullet.... that one would kick any moose ass!

Should I mention how many moose was taken with this round for the last 100 years in East Europe, Siberia and Far East? ;)

Personally, I would say 308 as a minimum, use 7,62x54, 8mm Mauser, 45-70 or 30-06 and the minimum weight of the bullet should be 174 grains.

Aha! You just realized that you forgot old mighty 45-70....it's old military surplus round too ;)
 
I have a 6.5x55, a 303 and a 7.62 Russian and if I had no choice but to bring only one of the above for moose, I'd take my Mosin Nagant in 7.62 and some Norma ammo loaded with 180 grain bullets, but the others would do too.
 
if you were going to buy a bubba'd milsurp for moose[beyond the list here]what would you choose-for price, quality,reliabilty as well as ammunition availabilty for factory ammo?
 
nvm, found the info, my worries were unfound,

Im glad to find that good ol' .303 is so varsetile, when I got my nr1 mk3 it was mostly for fun at the range and maybe a white tail but finding out that so many of you go bear and moose hunting makes my hart sing, this site is surly a great source of info

Well Deano Since you asked what type of milsurp rifles i have for the moose hunt, here they are:

1, 1941 carcano, (but it think she is staying home)
2, m38 Swede, She is a tack driver and i think loaded with norma vulkan a serious contender.
3, i have two No. 4's and a No.1, They also look really good for the hunt .
4, Norc m-14.
5, i am planing on buying a moisan nagat in the near future.
6. the only bubba'd rifle is a Mauser 98 small ring from austria dated 1912 rebarrel to 308, which is another serious contender. (but since she is not in original config i am still iffy about using it.
 
No1 --> 7.62x54R with good bullets, not soft point
No2 --> .308Win, no comment
No3 --> 6.5x55, with 160gr bullet, only upto 150-200yr

I agree, leave the Carcano at home. M38 would be fine I think. There are quite possibly thousands of dead moose in Scandanavia that would testify to the stopping power of the 6.5 x 55. The Lee Enfields would be fine as well. Leave the Norc at home.

Sounds like your goal is to go hunting with an authentic milsurp. I am assuming that there are no scopes involved. Try out you Lee Enfields and your M-38 and see which one you shoot better with. Your most accurate gun should be you primary gun, with your next most accurate gun brought as back up. 160 grain for the swede and 180 grain for the Lee Enfields.
