Best milsurp iron sight

Best shooting I get are with peep sights. My FN 49 sights are great and the rifle is a hoot to shoot. Very easy recoil which helps with the sight recovery too. Second is my M1 Garand with windage and elevation adjustments. My No4's and 5's are comfortable sights for my old eyes even if I have to use a little Kentucky windage. Mind you any target beyond 200 yards is pretty fuzzy no matter what sight I use.

If you are handy with a file you can pull the front site out of your SKS, wrap the threads in tape, and use your drill as an ad-hoc lathe, and then reduce the diameter of the site pin. Blue it aftr you're happy with the diameter.

I find it's a big improvement for target work.

Ad-hoc lathe: place your drill horizontally in your bench vise, set it to the slowest speed it can go, and have a friend (that likes you) operate the trigger. It's a little dangerous, so have a friend who pays attention run the drill, and do it in short sleeves, and take off your watch and rings, nose rings, nipple rings, or other piercings that can get caught in the chuck.

I agree with many others - as I age plain iron sights just don't work for me. The only iron sights I can hit a paper plate at 100yards with are peep sights. Yes to M1 Garand, Lee Enfield "Jungle Carbine" and Ross MKIII all worked well for me. But the iron sights on my Mosin and SVT are (to my eyes) a major pain. Also the K98 - can't hit jack with that. SKS sights - same issue. Maybe I could be a sniper, but please don't put a rifle in my hands with regular iron sights!

Agree with Garands and Enfield No4s, they have great sights, but so does the Enfield M1917 (one of my favorites) and the Springfield 1903A3.

The garand. Full stop.
One of the best set of irons ever put on a rifle.
Second only to the ar15 A2 sights.
The M1/M14 are unbelievably versatile, simple to use, simple to adjust, very long sight radius, peep sight is king for precision.

Shot a Remington 1941 03-A3 today for the first time with some 1940 Frankford Arsenal 30-06 rounds and was getting 3” groups at 100 yds - which for me is pretty good! Loved the sights on the rifle and it felt dead-on. Felt better than the Garand, No. 4 Mk. 1 or even M14 (toss up with the Finn M39 - will have to try them side by each.) Anyway, I enjoyed being able to shoot a 78 year old rifle with 79 year old ammo and show a good outing! (Don’t worry - already cleaned for corrosive ammo.) Maybe getting older isn’t so bad . . . .

And as for the M-1 carbine's sights?... ;)

The 300 yd sight setting on the Carbine is a little optimistic, kind of like having a bayonet lug. But we did have a bayonet lug on the C1 SMG which I remember doing drill with.

Carbines can be tweaked a bit with a tight fit on the recoil lug, variable tension on the upper band and making sure the wood is clear of the metal. 2 inch groups at 50 yds can be expected which makes it a threat at 100 yds. I wouldn't volunteer to be a target for one.
