Best Modern Single Shot Hunting Rifle

I have used a CVA, Henry, and ruger #1.

The Henry was okay, but when mounting a scope you had to mount up way too high to get over the hammer. Did not feel right at all.

The CVA was surprisingly nice for a budget rifle, and will own another one.

Love the ruger. 450 BM in stainless, laminate stock. Was my prime hunting rifle this year and has taken moose and elk. No problems with stalking and walking with it, and it performed well. Love the falling block, and I can push my reloads to the max velocity.

Uberti makes a 303 brit that I keep my eyes on as well.

The blazers are nice as well.

Often thought that a E. Arthur Brown Model 97D in 7-30 would have made a nice deer rifle...

But it seems like they are no longer in production...

If price is no object, a Hagn single shot, available from a couple of Canadian gunmakers.

Otherwise, I favour a Ruger No 1 Light Sporter in 7x57 Mauser.

Falling block...bolt...break action...some many different actions...if your going traditional, a good falling block, if your going for tried and true, a bolt rifle, and then you have the break action, which has come along ways..more refined, in the last 10 years....is accuracy, the most important? Or being able to bash the crap out of it on a long hunting trip...or just something to keep around the house...just in case..lost of choices...lots,... me I look to the past ( used or rebuildable) for my new rifle...I find they usually have better metals , fit and finish..but do your homework, some were good...some where junk!.

A decade or more ago I had an early model Blaser break open single-shot in 7.5x55 Swiss (see photo below). It was hard to mount a scope, but I finally figured out how to do it using modified Sako rings. However, I never warmed up to it, never shot it much, and eventually sold it. The same for a couple of 30-06 Ruger 77 fullstock carbines. I just didn't like them...The Ruger action always seemed to be something of a flimsy contraption. Also, too much muzzle blast/felt recoil from those carbines. More than a few years back, I saw a single shot that I liked at one of those big spring Calgary gun shows. It was on a table during set up before the show opened, some kind of old falling block Farquarson by a major British maker (whose name I immediately forgot), but it was minty, with an excellent bore in the useful .303 British caliber. The owner let me handle the rifle. It was nicely balanced and the falling block was smooth and well-fitted. I asked how much, and he replied in a voice like he was giving it away, "Only fourteen-five!" I went back to my table to get my son. I wanted to show it to him. When we got back it was gone. I asked about it and was told, "Sold it!" All before the show opened. I wasn't going to buy it, but it is still a benchmark rifle for me when I look over single shots. I know it is too high a standard to expect from a modern factory-built rifle, but I will continue to look. I have no experience with the various Brownings. Maybe I should look at them. They seem to come up for sale reasonably often. I do like the Hagn, but they are now priced out of the real world.95548.jpg

This Gibbs Farquharson is in 6.5 X 53 and is nicely balanced but of course isnt set up for a scope
