Best Moose Caliber

What do you all think the best Moose hunting caliber is? I am thinking of going with a .300 Ultramag..thoughts?

A question that is often repeated but never actually answered. There are MANY cartridges that meet this description.

You don't need any special magnums or other such things.

6.5x55, 7mm Mauser, .303 British, .308 Winchester, 8mm mauser, 30-06, 6.5 Creedmore, etc

Will all kill a Moose efficiently. Larger calibres and Magnums will do too, but you won't see a magic difference.

You're more likely to kill a moose with a rifle you can more easily afford to and are inclined to practice with than you are with the opposite.

Any of at least 40 calibers. 300 rum works.

Previously it was a reloader only caliber due to cost and rarity of factory ammo on all but the largest shops in the largest cities. Now its just scarce, i bought a box for the brass, $68 iirc. Probably more now, but bottom end vanilla caliber ammo is now always over $30. Saw H4831sc advertised today for over $60. No free lunches, even for reloaders anymore.

If you can shoot that 300 Ultra accurately, look no further.

This. You certainly don't NEED an Ultramag, but there is no reason it wouldn't work. Quite a bit of recoil from that, so I can only assume you'll either have a heavy rifle or a brake (or both), neither of which tickle my fancy in a hunting rifle but there is no reason why you couldn't use one.

Just remember that shot placement is what really counts - people have been killing moose for well over a century with the 30-30 and 303brit after all.

This year I'm taking a 7mm08 with 139gr GMX for my moose hunt. My buddies will all be packing 30-06s with 180gr cup-and-core bullets.

big heavy bullets at velocities under 3000 fps for penetration

If he reloads he can always pick a stout bullet too, something like a 200gr A-Frame aught to handle Ultramag velocities just fine and still give impressive penetration. If he doesn't reload I hope he has some deep pockets 'cause that rifle won't be cheap to feed...

I would recommend trying out a .300 RUM before choosing one to hunt with. Unless you need the range the extra velocity over .308/-06/.300 win really isn't necessary for a clean kill. Not the funnest kind of cartridge in a typical hunting rifle either.

My grandfather bagged 52 moose with his 30-30. All but one was a 1 shot kill.

He could shoot his rifle accurately and knew where to hit the moose.

You can go for a gross-over-kill if you want, but from what I have seen the heavy kickers reduce field accuracy and then do more poorly than a well placed shot with a rifle like a 308 or 303.

300 RUM is overkill unless you already own the rifle.

But anything from a sharp stick to a 50bmg and up will do the job.
