Best non-res SHTF gun?

My Yugo sks will do me proud I'm sure. As for enemy combatants, I'm sure lots of people will be killing each other regardless of firearm type in their hands. Trying to protect their homes and belongings ect will be on alot of peoples minds. Also who says enemy combatants wont be weilding some western firearms aswell anyhow.

I would be fleeing to the bush with survival supplies and my SKS will all the strippers I can carry.

I'll go with a shottie: a 590 or an 870 sounds about right...

I could see a 10/22 working well, depending on the degree to which things have collapsed. Don't ask me to explain, I'm still too tired at this time. ;)

I am reading the original question as "what gun would you want to have cose by at all times" which means non-restricted. So yes, the restricted non-restricted issue DOES matter.

I vote for a 22 of some flavour. As as mentioned above, 30 round mags are perfectly legal and if it a Krinker plinker setup, very tactical, light and easy to carry lots of ammo for. 2000 rounds in a backpack is not at all a burden, nor is 5-10 30 rounders. No worries about it weathering in your vehicle, it'll sghoot with a bit of rust on it or if it's damp.

It's something you can keep close in your car or truck and use to fight your way back to your AR or M14, without breaking the law prior the SHTF.

22LR may not kill on the first shot, but as I am only trying to make my way to my RV, all I really want is to be left alone.

If I dump a 30 round mag into you, you WILL leave me the #### alone.

All you guys who picked a .223/5.56 rifle are crazy.

Maybe in the US it would make sense, but here in Kanada we ocassionally have to shoot deer larger than 75lbs (the last one I shot dressed 220).

We have large predators like grizzly and black bears (yes they do eat people in my PERSONAL experience).

2 legged preditors wear various types of "body armour" from heavy leather & denim to ceramic plates for @8 months/year.

Y'all seem to be assuming a perminant July SHTF senario.

My take on a "battery" would include a 10/22, and a .22 REVOLVER,

1+ large caliber revolver (.357, .44, .45 Colt),

12 Gauge pump shotgun

.30 Cal rifle (.308, .30-06, .303 ect) & a .30 cal carbine (7.62x39 or .30-30)

You may note that I didn't include a semi-auto pistol? I'm even cautious about semi rifles?

Magazine based weapons are quite vulnerable to magazine wear and spring weakness. Unless you're planning a "summer vacation" senario, it's something to keep in mind.

To answer the original question: an M-14 variation for S/A and a (reasonably lightweight) Mauser, Remchester/Savage or Lee Enfield B/A to deal with any realistic SHTF senario.

While it would be nice to be able to pot the occasional coyote with a varmit cal, I think I'd need a more flexible cartridge over there in the "real world".

Hey good call on behalf of shooting the deer. I exclued the XCR for the M14s and or a bolt action in .308 a remington 700 :D

A pistol is always good to have but im leaving this out to the un-res criteria

So that leaves me with the 10/22, 870 and a .308 (P22 Shhh im cheap and the 870 isnt a clone i sware):ban:
