Best non-res SHTF gun?

How many other people think they are just gonna come across guns and ammo just LAYING in the streets? Maybe a rocket launcher too? Do you not think if one was dropped in the streets or the owner of it killed that the person(s) who attacked them would not take it or another passer by would grab it? Even for anti-gun people they will know/relize the value of one and take it if they have the chance. A SHTF event is no video game...
 
Weight, size, accuracy, and the ability to carry a bunch of ammo are high on my list. Therefore my first choice would be one of my AR-7's and a few bricks of RF. But since this is in the black rifle forum (Technically the AR-7 is black), I'll assume there is a centerfire component to the question... and in keeping with the spirit of the post, my second choice would be my NR PS-90. Again very small and light, breaks down into two pieces with the press of a button, and fits neatly into a knapsack with a crap load of ammo.

I only say that because the same people who claim that that will happen are that same that claim their views are down to earth, smart and that they will be one of the sole survivours. IMO...if you want to last more then a few weeks in a SHFT event your gonna wanna stay low key a possible. I get the vibe on here that many people wanna grab there AR or CZ 7.62, strap their Glock on their leg, thow on their tact vest and go head first into combat and looking for supplies. Its like they wanna live out all the cool SHTF movies/video games thinking that just like in the movies they can fight off legues of "raiders/football amour and face paint clad men" and start their own barter town.

On a side note...maybe we actually will find guns/gear laying on the streets from all the Ricky Rambos out there :)

Personally I will be staying as low key as possible, armed with probably a .22 or 12g and would rather sneek past someone then open up on them.

I'd agree (with those that have said) that the SKS would likely be the best PRE-SHTF firearm to have around. Ammo is still pretty cheap and fairly available. It's been easy to get a couple of cases piled up. They shoot fairly well and parts are pretty easy and inexpensive to get. Fairly versatile in way of customization for those who are prone to such things. Sometimes may even make a not so good rifle better.

AFTER TSHTF, any firearm is a good firearm to have around. But, as the thread title says, we're not talking about those.

And no, should there be a general collapse of society, I don't suspect the pinned 5 round rifle mags will the first choice of firearms users. Until then, it's what we have.
 
I'd probably choose the SKS. Light weight, reliable, hits more or less what you're aiming at, low cost rifle, low cost ammo, quick and easy to reload with stripper clips.

Just from my collection, there are probably better choices available.
 
If SHTF I don't think it would give you a free pass to walk around the streets with a loaded CZ858 or AR15. Maybe, if 2 months go by and we don't have any food, water, natural gas, or electrity because the entire planet was knocked out from a massive solar storm, then you could walk the streets with your assault rifle because all of the police and military would be gone home to protect there own family and homes. Until that were to happen, I would'nt walk the streets with your assault rifle because it will be taken away also. A concealed handgun would be the way to go if SHTF and all you were trying to do was search for food at a grocery store, or just check to see whats going on. Best to keep the assault rifle at home, in the hands of whoever is capable of using it, looters away.

Really, the most important SHTF gun is going to be a .22lr with thousands of rounds of ammo so you can feed the family every day by plinking a Goose that is swimming in the pond at the golf course. Mmmmmhhhh, roasted goose and pigeon by the campfire with a side of old cow corn every day would be a great meal for the family....LOL......Best to stock up on Salt, Pepper, and Spices, because your going to need them.
 
Depending on where and how the SHTF this would be handy...

For the almost the same price of an CZ 858 I think I would pass. Plus handgun store baught ammo is way more expensive and not as aboundent as the X39 rounds. As a matter of fact the X39 round is the most produced center fired round in the world.
But then again a mostly plastic folding (don't know if it's a pistol but dosn't have the range of a rifle) gun that is only worth $300 to $400 max I guess would be worth more than a rock or a stick. Naa I would pick an SkS over this or better yet an Enfield (for King & Country!).

Painfully obvious disclaimer: Not advocating the illegal/immoral hastening of LEO demise(s) in any way, shape or form, even if/when SHTF...:rolleyes:

If the SHTF, the best non-restricted gun to have is a 12 gauge pump action shotgun. Hands down. You can use it to scare off looters, pesky racoons and squirrels and hunting too.

The mossberg 500 is reliable and cheap. Get a few barrels like a rifled slug, bird barrel and home defense barrel and then you are all set. Three guns in one. Plus 12 gauge ammo is everywhere and abundant.
