best of the best 44 mag?

I second the opinion that Henry is not your gun if you're going to be carrying it around. Read the link I posted from the Truth About Guns in post # 9, the guy says as much.

They honestly feel like they're twice as dense as a normal gun, which may be fine for a very short time, but that's it. I don't mean the kind of weight difference that a bigger guy can handle easier than a smaller person, like a 200 pound guy being able to aim a 44 mag as easily as a 170 pound guy can aim a 357. The Henry is the equivalent of carrying around a GPMG with no sling, it feels that heavy.

So if you were just looking for the best Cowboy Action gun then sure, but definitely not for carrying it around long distances.

Love my BB in 44 mag, but this week i use for the first time a little Chiappa Skinner sights 16 inch ( had it for over one year BNIB ), i must say , smooth operation, positive ejection, sweet trigger, those sights were dead on and so easy to shoot...
I am happy it did not sell on the EE, i always should shoot my rifles before...
Of the bat with those Skinner sights, it was one ragged hole at 50 yards with EA 240 gr HP... Impressive little 44... JP.

one of the drawbacks of the Henry Products is their warranty. On the surface an advertised "lifetime warranty" would seem to be the cats ass, however in reality I've found it to be a problem. The problem is that they won't ship any parts, from the factory or warranty depot...the gun must be sent to the depot for repair of any kind ,no matter how trivial the problem, and when a friend of mine requested a timeline for service they were told one couldn't be supplied.

He has a gun with a broken ejector, a 10 minute changeover for anybody with a screwdriver but he has to ship the whole gun 1500 miles for an unspecified time.

Thanks for all the replies and info. A 44 lever is on the short list but I mite go for another bolt gun first
The marlin 94 I held today just didn't feel I don't know how to explain it. It wasn't like the feeling I get holding my win 9422 or the various 92 copies I've held. I think I like the 92 a lot better. I'll keep my eye out for one with nice wood and bright case colors. If i don't find one by Xmas bonus a light compact semi custom bolt gun in either 338 fed or 358 win will find its way home. I'll prolly send the action and trigger guard and rings out to be case colored

Why don't you do both, a .44 AND a bolt gun in the same gun... (third gun down);

Your going to case harden-colour a bolt action? Yetch... save it for your lever rifle... JMO

What don't you have Hoyt? When I look at th Cooper site they have a pic of a gorgeous case colored bolt action that would be mint in 250 savage with highly figured walnut But I don't have the $5/6000 for that. A classy lil 338 or 358 case colored with a 20"polished blue barrel in a slim wood stock can be had for $1500 and I think id be happy. Just can't decide whether to get 338 or 358.
I'm slowly replacing my hunting and fun guns with higher quality ones of wood and blued steel. I'm a sucker for case colors though
Color case hardening in Canada by Alain Combes Gunsmith. He has some stuff and is Canadian. Not sure if his prices are in line with others but his work looks good

Well... I do have both of those in a number of platforms... I can offer an opinion, but risk the Fudd's throwing mud pies... (back-off SC)... I love the .358, great cartridge... but, if I were only doing one... it would be the Fed with 225 AB's... what a great round... JMO.

I've got a 96/44 lever action that I would sell, if you are interested while it's available. It's a custom built rifle, has a stainless heavy barrel and a custom stock with a dual pc cheek pc. PM if interested.

You've got my vote .

I had a B92 and loved it but stupidly sold it off and then when looking to buy another found a Ruger no 3 in 44mag and haven t looked back. The no 3 in 44mag is the ideal bush gun, handy to tote all day in thick brush and the 44mag carries a nice punch when you need it at out to 100yards

I love the brass Henrys and the uberti silver boys but they're quite reflective while hunting

You could shoot it with flat brass GunKote, but it wouldn't be pretty anymore; if you did that you might as well make it gun metal blue. Someday I'll get around to doing my NWT Winchester Commemorative, which was badly neglected before I got it.

Anyone have experience with Taylors and Co 1886 platform?

That basic Taylor's is just a rebranded uberti. Like all the uberti replicas, they are very nicely made and would probably be just fine.

The only rebadged uberti worth paying more for, IMHO, is the Cimarron stuff because they add value with more authentic markings, better wood, and they are each re-tuned and gone over in the us -often a different us spring kit is installed. The few cimarrons I've had were nicer than the avg uberti, but they also cost a lot more.

unfortunately, according to their website, it is a rebranded Chiappa, and we all know what kind of crap they have been making.
