what do people think is the best of the best when it comes to milsurp?
i have been looking around to get into the older guns but im just not sure which ones are good and which are just crap, i like the look of alot of the older rifles but i don't know what sort of things to look for to tell a good m1 from a bad m1.

Well, let me be the first to stir the pot. For the past 5-6 years the two winningest rifles are No.4 Lee Enfields and 30-06 M1 Garands at the local milshoot rifle matches. Everything else is an also ran, which sometimes rise to challenge or maybe beat the first two rifles. The best reason worth mentioning is they both have aperature rear sights, close to the shooter's eye.

I say get an unsporterized Lee Enfield No 4 - insist on an excellent bore. They presently go for $300-400.

As for accuracy, I agree with the above. The winners at Milshoots are consistently those with rear aperature sights. Add the P14 and P17 to the list.

To me, the M1 sights are a bit better (especially with a fine NM rear aperature) and I like the M1 a bit more for fun factor. Mind you, at prices these days, you can snag a LE #4 and a Mosin or maybe even a #5 for the same price as a fine M1. It depends a lot on budget.

Two words for you: Spanish Mausers ;)

I am gonna say Mauser K98k (surprise!). Besides the very strong action that has been copied many times, it is one ###y, accurate rifle.

As far as what to look for in them, you will have to decide if you are going the collector route or just the shooter route. Each would have somewhat different priorities on what to look for with each type of rifle.

What's a P17?;)

Best score I've shot in one of the shoots was with my K31 though.....
