Hey everyone, I know this probably has been asked a billion times, and it's somewhat of a loaded question as I found an alternative, but in your opinion, what's the best oil for a gun?

best oil

I am trying out and so far, very pleasantly surprised with how well Frog Lube works on my rifles. It is marketed as a plant-based environmentally friendly cleaner, lube and protectant that after initial treatment wipes off leaving a dry slick film. It slicks things up enough for my .22 semi auto that I have no need to add additional drops of oil to make things run smoothly. I don't sell for the company- I reccommend them highly. Look on Youtube for more info.

Very cool. I'll have to check this out! Here's one that maybe some of you have tried. I recently had trouble with my door locks in very cold weather. The humidity inside would cause the key hole to not co-operate with the key. I threw a little synthetic bike oil in there and it works beautifully. I thought, if this works, what about with guns? I know guys that ride their bikes in super nasty conditions here in manitoba and they swear by using syn bike lube. They put it on their chains and it repels water, ice, dirt etc. I tried a couple of test runs simply putting a thin layer in between two pieces of metal and sticking them outside in -28 weather. Still super slick after an evening sitting in the garage. I've tried it on one of my sporters and it works awesome!!!!! Has anyone else done this? I find some of the lubes you get at gun stores thin and I don't like the feel of metal on metal I get with them. My old man would throw a layer of bearing grease on it which is obviously not good. It seems like the mountain bike companies make high quality syn lube for chains and parts, so I thought I'd give it a go. Opinions? Thoughts?

Just checked out frog lube. Looks awesome!!! I like the fact that it's environmentally friendly, and safe to handle. I might give that a go

Ok, one more question than. What about wood stocks? What's the best preservative out there? I've heard scott's liquid gold is the way to go. Anyone else have a better product?

For wood, I would strip the finish and use tung oil. It can be matte or brought to a sheen/gloss and can be constantly reapplied without negative effect. I am working towards this on all my rifles.

Lubrication for a gun isn't critical, and just about any lubricant will do just fine. Moving and sliding forces in a gun are not that large. What do most guns cycle in their lifetime? 50,000 for a rifle, and maybe 100,000 for a handgun (centrefire).

Compare this to a car engine. 2,500 rpm = 150,000 cycles per hour !!!

I use a synthetic, diesel rated oil...... (because thats the synthetic we have)

Amen to that, I thought I was the only one!! Any lube will work fine, I've even used silicone s3x lube (Gun Oil) once when I didnt have any oil for my pistol. Worked great for 600 rounds before I cleaned it again and no adverse affects. As most engines and transmissions now have high strength/high temp plastics on them, the oils and greases are safe for use on polymers as well and most oil makers make presision oilers with their brand inside and its available, cheap, at any parts store

I use hoppes 9 to clean my guns, an Rem oil (teflon) to lube it. the basics no gimmicks, works great. Or if you want to use an oil that isnt for guns use air tool oil. syntec and diesel oil have all these detergents in them and "could" ruin the finish.

I have followed the mighty Hickok45's advice and have been using Ballistol on everything! My pistols, shotguns and rifles (including the wood stocks). It works. Smells like Jagermeister but you can get used to it. Over time and repeated use it builds a Teflon like barrier on the surfaces. It is also safe on everything even you! Non-toxic.

clean = ed's red...lube = most any gun oil...protect = birchwood casey barricade (formerly sheath) ...try this test at home, grind some metal (or nails, old gun parts/barrel) clean wipe with alcohol, apply (with q-tip) as many protectants as you have (include barricade) mark what you applied...leave outside to rust (sometimes i've applied salt to speed process) the results of whatever you're using now will make you re-think what you use to protect your guns from rust..i've tried over 10 different claimed rust protectors for firearms!!...clp, baristol, remoil, hoppe's, 3into1 oil, wonderlube (for blackpowder) ETC. ...next will be froglube...sometimes my eyes believe what i see (not just what someone tells me)

i use cheap, non synthetic atf mixed half and half with cheap, non synthetic 50 weight oil. The stuff clings to all surfaces, keeps everything lubed and rust free, and it gosts about 3 bucks a litre. Downside? It's pink

To protect from rust, the only thing you need is good ol' WD40, but dont trust it to lube anything. It is a good cleaner and protectant though
