Best open sights?

I have a couple of questions for the experts.

Which milsurp came with the best open sights (not including target versions)? By best I mean best for accuracy, not neccessarily for the battlefield.

What open sights are available for milsurps that you can recommend and that will not lead to a bubba'd rifle?


I am thinking of picking up a milsurp or two but I'd also like to take it hunting. I've owned a M38 Swede and a M48 Yugo. I didn't think either were very good. Are my expectations too high?
 
As much as some people hate them, mauser sights are awesome when you have time to properly aim. As a millitary sight, they are hard for quick aquisition, and literally dissapear when in low light...

BUT, as a target sight, they are pinpoint accurate when conditions are good.
 
For target shooting, probably the 1903 Springfield. Not good for anything else, though! The SMLE has pretty good sights, and the earlier ones even had a windage adjustment. The Schmidt-Rubin has great sights, and you can buy a neat fine adjustment attachment for them. Lee-Enfield No.4's had pretty nice sights for target shooting, too.
 
I like the sights on my K31, LE No. 4 Mk 1 and Mauser CG63. The M14 copy is also good. I guess I like peep sights in general and the sights on the K31 because I can shoot it well. Less so the russian mosins. Last the mauser sights, havent really shot as well as I know the rifle can with these.
 
OK, being the guy to nit pick here do you mean open sights or just iron sights? Because technically peep/aperature sights and open sights are two different things. As for open sights, Mausers suck, open sights should work well in low light and they don't for me. Lee Enfield SMLE open sights on the other hand are very easy to see in poor light although less accurate, they are great for hunting. Funny how something good for battle crosses over to hunting pretty well.
 
Finn M/39 rifles have great sights.

And, strictly as a combat sight, I like the weird forward mounted ghost ring on the Arisaka T-99. Not great for deliberate shooting, but very fast to pick up.

Battle = Hunting, except you're hunting humans. And sometimes deer appear smarter than soldiers.
 
Deer don't have to follow orders even if it doesn't make a lot of sense.

For aperture sights I agree the M1917/P14 sights are really nice, and Ross M10 sights are not bad, but are a little slow to adjust and a bit weird in that I still haven't figured out that dual peep/knotch thing they have going on, but windage is nice to have. My favourite are the sights on my '50 Long Branch with the fine graduated sight that is quick and easy to adjust, and the large ghost ring battle sight.
