Best optic for an M14 DMR Build?

Hello CGN brothers and sisters!

I am wondering what the best optic would be for my M14 DMR build.

I have an accurized Norinco M14 shorty in a VLTOR stock and with an M14.ca CASM see-through rail, now I am debating what optic to put on it.

Here are my criteria:
- Rugged design that can survive field conditions
- Good balance between quick short-range target acquisition and long-range accuracy
- (preferably) .308 bullet drop compensation

So the first thing that came to mind is an ACOG calibrated for .308

But I'd be interested to hear about other options & experiences, like maybe the Elcan Specter for .308, more conventional scopes, etc.

Well, soooo much depends upon budget but here are my thoughts re mounting glass on a M14-style rifle:

1. If on a tight budget the absolute best value to put on these rifles is a Bushnell Elite ( the old Elite 3200 ) fixed 10X. Very solid and I've never heard of one fail on these ' hard on scopes' rifles.
2. A better choice but a little more money and hard to get in Canada is the SWFA SS 10x
3. If you want to reach out and see bullet holes at reasonable distance there is a lot to be said for the new(ish) Bushnell Elite 3.5-21x50 DMR scope. The price however has, by this point, risen considerably.
4. If you want to copy the USMC then there is the S+B PMii 3-12 which, of the ones mentioned in this post, would be the best choice IMO.

So, as you can see, much is determined by application and budget.
 
Dude, an Elcan or acog mounted on a casm will have rediculous hight over bore. Even higher than the chinweld in your photo.

Stick with a conventional scope.
 
Will these conventional scopes handle abuse though? What if the rifle gets dropped? ACOG, ELCAN and other ruggedized optics can take a beating.

My budget - I'd like to keep it under $1000

Tomochan is right on... A 10X40 Bushnell will fit the bill nicely if you stay under 300 yards, then if you go for serious distance 600 yards+ there is no better tool than a S&B... JP

A cheap scope... Well will prove to be very cheap with the double recoil of the M1A... The Bushnell 10X40 is solid, but a 200.00 scope on the rifle will not last long... JP.
 
Update - after much debate I bought an ACOG TA11E .308 with the red chevron reticle:

"ACOG 3.5x35 scope with Red Chevron BAC Reticle- The ranging reticle is calibrated for 7.62 (.308 cal) flat-top rifles to 800 meters. Includes Flat Top Adapter.
The chevron reticle is designed to be zeroed using the tip at 100 meters. The width of the chevron at the base is 5.53 MOA which is at 19” at 300 meters. This allows range estimation for silhouette targets."

I will post an update once it goes to the range!
