I recently bought my first bolt action rifle as well as being my first firearm that i will be needing a scope for. I was hoping for some input on a solid well rounded scope for this rifle.

-$600-$1200 price range
-would like to be able to reach out to 800 yards at least
-needs hand adjustable turrets

For that price range it would hard to beat a Vortex Viper PST ...... But once you have held a Viper PST along side a Night Force, your budget will increase!

this price range you looking at - bushnell, viper, sightron and might snag a leupold of the EE , and maybe a few others. id probably be looking for a sightron.

any target / "tactical" scope will have no tool adjutable turrets

as for getting to 800, remember clear glass will make more of a differance then high magnification. so take optical quality over a high mag scope

ok thanks for the input. i am looking at the Bushnell Elite Tactical 6-24x50mm for $850 would any of you recommend it or should i save to get a better quality scope as i do not want to have to upgrade for a long time or at all. i just want something thats adequate for the rifle.

ALWAYS buy the best you can afford if you dont want to upgrade.. for the price they arnt to bad for clarity but i personally fine the x-hairs to be waay to thick

Sightron will serve you well. Or if you want to spend a bit more I recommend a Leupold Mark 4 LRT 3.5-10x40 they usually run for around 1400 new but theres one on the EE Right now for 1100 I think

I got the viper 6.5-20x50 mill dot vortex scope on my remington 5r and am quite happy with it so far. Nice clarity. Cant speak to the ranges your speaking about though. Ive been under 300 yards mostly.

In that price range I would go with the PST, I don't think it can be beat for the price. I am a big fan of immuminated reticles especially if you plan on shooting at dusk or doing some coyote shooting.

I have narrowed it down to the sighton iii and the viper pst. I have looked at alot of reviews and both seem promising. I will want to use it for hunting as well as at the range. I read that there are some nice features on the pst such as illum reticle, zero stop. I was wondering if the better glass on the sightron out weighs the features on the viper. Thanks

You will get a million and one opinions on this, I don't notice a differece between the PST and the Sightron. IMO the next big noticible step up from a PST is a USO or S&B.

I was on the fence between those two scopes about a month ago. Some of the reviews I read gave a slight optical advantage to the SIII, most said that they couldn't discern a noticeable difference, and a couple said that they would give the edge to the PST.

The advantages of the SIII are:

- more elevation travel - 100MOA vs. 65-70MOA of the PST
- possibly a slight edge in optical clarity - debatable
- possibly a slight edge in mechanical repeatability of the adjustment turrets - debatable
- 15MOA per revolution, compared to 12MOA with the PST

The PST has these advantages:

- available in FFP, which was important to me, since I use the reticle for wind holds
- zero stop is a nice bonus
- illuminated reticle is also a nice bonus, albeit unnecessary for the shooting I do
- slight advantage in warranty
- better reticle, IMO
- better eye relief
- not sure about Sightron's coatings, but Vortex has a scratch-resistant coating on the PST, which is nice

With a 20-30MOA rail, the 65MOA of elevation that the 6-24x PST has (my scope has 70MOA, FWIW) is plenty. For my purposes, the PST FFP was the better choice.
