So I am looking at putting a scope on my 870 and plan on making many upgrades to it but I was wondering what you guys thought was best, I want a reflex sight of some sort for it. I was thinking I would either go to a gunsmith and get him to drill and tap the shotgna nd put a bsic weaver mount on it and mount a sight on that or there is a bushnell sight I found interesting that is built to just screw onto the gun (this is the exact one I am talking about) http://bushnell.com/general/riflescopes_holosight_53-0027.cfm Any thoughts you guys have would be greatly appreciated thanks:)

(I have gotten bored of the looks and feel of my 870 with stock stuff so I decided I will "tacticalize" it and give it a makeover:) I am putting a speedfeed 3 tactical stock on it and plan on gettin a mag extension and then when its all put together I want to paint it all tan or some colour like that:) )

:p The best optics are: your eyeball behind a properly fitted stock! Shotguns are fitted and not sight aligned, as rifles or pistols. Find a good stock maker/fitter in your area. Not one top shotgunner evers sees the front bead! :p

Best regards and Happy Holidays,:runaway:

Tacticool, or tacti-heavy?? I won't suggest anything as I prefer bead sights. Optics on a shotgun unless its a dedicated slug gun seem to make no sense to me.

I would like to add that I am 15 and dont mind the weight of the gun, seeing as I am not really affected by a few pounds extra (lots of energy to burn) hahah anyways I would take it turkey hunting, possibly use slugs and go deer hunting and just for fun at the range, I know other sights like the ghost rings may be more effective but I am just doing this to spice up the gun a bit and have fun with it:p

While somewhat pricey, the new line of Aimpoint Micro T-1 and H-1 are great red dots. They are much lower than a ML2,3 or 4 or an EoTech. They almost co-witness with the ghost rings on my Fabarm and look really sharp. Very robust and built very well.

However at $600 for a optic I'd start saving your pennies.

I'd go with a red dot or holosight that you could use on other guns if you wanted...
Why get a holosight that will only work on your 870?
The 870 specific sight might be a lower setup with a better cheek weld but I think I'd go for a rail and a separate sight.

Yes, especially when their T-1 price is less than their H-1 price. That is below cost and likely won't last long.

My recommendation for shotgun optics is to keep them small and light. Recoil is a bear on most Sgs, and the mounts take a beating. Bigger optics = more stress.

Consider the Docter Optic or its clones too.

Looks pretty solid. :)

Next would be a basic non-NV option EOTech if one wanted to spend some coin.

Either a B-square mount or a rail on the top of the receiver will give you lots of options. As another poster said, it doesn't make a lot of sense to shell out a pile of money for an optic that is specific to the 870. Once you've got that rail on top (either through a mount or the services of a smith), you can decide which type of optic is right for you (I'd probably lean towards a Dr Optik) If you decide that you don't like it and want to switch to ghost rings, then that optic is still useful for something else that you own...or for resale on the EE for a good price. You might have to take a larger loss if you were selling an 870-specific optic on the EE.

Thank you guys for all the options! I am liking the Doctor optics idea and get a mount installed by gunsmith and if I ever get an AR or something I could always interchange the optics:) How much do the Doctor optics run for? I believe I have seen one on a shotgun before and thought it looked pretty good so I would like to check it out:)

I think that most of the good quality red dot type sights are in the $400 price range, I'd suggest that a good place to comparison shop would be TSE's price listing right on these here forums. They updated their prices in November, and they have Aimpoint, Eotech and Dr Optik listed.

Of course I'm a little biased since I live in Calgary and they're about ten minutes from my place :D

You can get the standalone version for the 870 OR the one ready for any Weaver-style mount.
Higginson advertises them at $255.00 for both styles and they are very good reflex sights, much smaller and lower than the original Holosight.

Here's a pic:

This sight is specifically designed for the 870 so recoil shouldn't be an issue. Requires no gunsmithing and goes on like the b-square mount. Problem is I haven't seen a pic of it on a gun yet. I would think resale should be ok being the 870 and it's clones are verrrrrrrryyyyyy popular.....they sell for around $260 U.S.
