Best optics mount for 858?

Yes a PKAV would mount perfectly in position over the dust cover. The Russians have a different theory about red dots then us. They want them as close to the eye as possible so that your eye is not hindered by the ouline of the tube in your vision. They are all over the two eyes open shooting dicipline and when you think about it that way having the optic close only makes sense.

Looks like s**t?

I thought about getting a forward mounted red dot but decided against it as I think they look like s**t. This SVD mount and red dot has made the rifle much more usefull to me. I can shoot it much more accurately and at far greater distances. I can on average hit a 12" gong at 400 yds once in every three shots with Czech surplus. It is also a hell of lot quicker to get back on target after taking a shot.

Im not gonna pretend to know, the best way to mount optics on this weapon . It boils down to personal pref. I like the setup i have it works very well for me. I can zero my eotch in three shots so having to do that isnt a big deal ( infact most of the time this is not needed the scope stays at zero after cleaning) This would be more of an issue at longer ranges 400+ but the rifle is not much use for the most part after that range anyhow. And I dont think it looks like sh*t either, I might think spacers and tack welds might though.

Whatever floats your boat bdog. I simply stated the reason I would not fit one. I agree with you about tack welds though, I also think they would look #### on an 858.

PS with a rail the sight is always at zero no matter if it has been removed or not.

well #### supra I think I might go with that sight then, I was considering mounting a cheap single lens reflex sight on a barrel-clamping mount, but the side-rail mounted PKA seems like a waaay sweeter and all around better option. not to mention totally right with the style of the rifle in general. not to mention, removing the optic to use irons requires no tools with that side-rail clamping design, the commies got that part dead right.

edit: the 1.5-4.5 adjustable PSO looks short/compact enough to clear sufficiently as well, and takes AA battery:

good magnification range for the 858 rifle, the red dot sure seems like an excellent plan too, perhaps I can use both :)

and a third to add, which is cheaper, is the PSO 2.5x fixed:

takes a standard AA battery too, wide angle (12 degree) field of view. seems like a great choice if it doesnt get banged up.

i hope nobody minds the gratuitous image posting.

EDIT AGAIN: now I just need to figure out which of these sights are offset, if not all of them...
