what is the best ''all weather''out of the box semi automatic 22,in terms of function, accuracy, reliability and value? Not interested in aftermarket stuff-just a truck grouse gun
There is only one right answer...he did say "best".
Not "most popular" or "cheapest" or "has hi-cap mags"....he asked for
"function,accuracy, reliability and value"
T/C R55 all weather, All stainless steel, no aluminum (ala 10/22) accuracy unsurpassed in an out of the box autoloader....the TC is what the 10/22 should be.
For an out of th ebox all weather semi auto I would have to say the TC would probably be the best choice. However, the 10/22 has many more options for possible customization. Quite easlily you could buy a 10/22 "stainless" and buy a stainless barrel for it as well as a synthetic stock. That probably wouldn't be TOO much money and the rig would be very accurate. But since you are not interested in customization, a stock 10/22 would probably be accurate enough for grouse hunting - especially offhand.
I have read very good things about the Thompson Centre but have no actual experience with them. I do have a Ruger 10-22 and highly recommend it for functionality, however it has a terrible trigger pull out of the box. Surprizingly enough my old Gevarm is tough to beat in the reliability and accuracy department.
An older marlin semi auto(clip fed)... Its our farms truck gun, and has never once let us down. Its done allot of killing for us on the farm, from pests(coyotes, racoons, skunks, gophers ect ect) to livestock(cattle, pigs). it has a 16.5" barrel, and looks sort of like a m1 carbine, with the wood handgaurd.
I am well aware there are numerous ''tricked'' out 22's-which I am not interested in[not saying anything against those who do want that]I am looking strictly at ,as I said, function, accuracy reliability and value.I do like the T/C,but the Marlin papoose has an advantage for its take down and storage feature-how are they for accuracy, reliability and function?
The papoose is truly a decent little gun. Not a tack driver, but it will still outshoot a 10/22 out of the box. Both of mine will shoot into 1/2" at 25 yds. Mine will feed everything you put into them from target ammo to stingers, and I don't recall ever having a failure in either one. The take down is handy, and assembly takes about 15 seconds.
The Thompson will break the bank, and I don't think truck guns are supposed to. The Ruger is good enough, and so is the Marlin. Can't speak to the Savage. The Remington 597's are very accurate, is cheaper than the Ruger and the ergonomics are better if you are a normal sized person. The Ruger's dimensions are great if you are 5'5" and 120 lbs.
Since when did an "all weather" firearm have to be stainless? The term stainless is just that. STAIN...LESS. A blued firearm will handle the elements just as well. It comes down to how well the firearm is cared for by the operator.
+1 for the 597. I have no complaints about mine especially considering i paid $200 for it brand new. And yes the trigger guard is some type of synthetic material but its very durable, i really like the way the 597 feels compared to a 10/22
