Which is the best of the bunch for North American hunting/shooting and why?

"I think I read somewhere that the .284 has been the most widely used parent
case so I'll go with other."

That is incorrect, it is a relative newcomer to the game, and 99% of shooters have not even heard of the 284 Win or its wildcat derivatives, let alone owned one.

I think the .284 is the same as a 7mm.

.284" is the cal or bore size.
It does not refer to any cartridge or case.
If you just mentioned the cartridge called the 284 you'd be referring to 284 Winchester and it has only one legitimised wildcat, the 6.5/284.
If anything it's the parent case with the least offspring.

Actually, the 308 is nothing more than a shortened '06 when you get down to it.
So, the '06 class shoud really win.

Exactly Cat...

the '06 wins it... despite being such a boring round!

Options 1 and 4 are just duplicates of option 2.

And don't forget about the 404 with fathered the WSM, SAUM and RUM line, the 416Rigby which begat the 378wby and its descendants as well as the 338 Lapua. Then there's the 284 win which begat the 6.5-284, 6-284 and a few others. And the 7.62x39 which became the 20, 22 and 6mm ppc. And the 250 Savage (which is technically a Mauser offshoot with it's .472 head). And a few more.

But the vast majority of our current cartridges trace thier lineage (and bolt face diameter) to the 7x57 Mauser

I`ll take the H&H or other ..

With the .257 WBY & the 7MM RM I think you have everything in NA covered and then some. If not, the .338 will make up for any shortfalls

I`d choose other for my interest in the .270WSM

I picked other. I got me dang one gun from each group. My main hunter is still a 303 Brit. I'll just have to buy for guns to see wich I like more and more and more....

Any .30 caliber. As said before it will take anything down in North America.

.....uh-huh..... :onCrack::onCrack:

That includes everything from the 32ACP to the 7.62 Luger, to the 32-20 to the 30 carbine and 7.62x39 to the 300 RUM and 30-378 wby

I'm going with the .308 family just because of the brass availability. Even if the SHTF, finding .308 brass will probably be easier than any of the others. Aside from necking the .308 up and down, you can even cut them short and make .45 auto cases (or .45 Winmag, .460 Rowland, .44 Automag, etc...) from them.

I know you can do the same thing with .30-06 brass but I still think there's more .308 type available.

Just my $0.02. ($0.0184US)

32 rf 32 acp and 32-20 won't work because they are .32 cal and not .30

I think you'll find that - designation notwithstanding - these are .310/.311's. Same diameter as the 303 Savage, 303 brit, 7.62x39, 7,62x54, etc
