just realized this is my first post. Hi guys, im a avid outdoorsman from alberta and love fishing, hunting and all things outdoors. I have been a full time firefighter/EMT for 6 years now and hope to be a good addition to this forum. Ive been lurking for a while and have found a ton of great info on here. I promise not to make stupid treads before i use the search function, after i have searched and not found a desirable result i will probably make a stupid thread, haha. thanks guys!

Welcome to CGN and enjoy!

Any slug that makes contact in the right spot...I am sure some might go more then other but I would say it wouldn't really make much of a difference. What game are you wanting to hunt? Your gun is a smooth bore so you have to stick to rifled slugs. Any bought at Wal Mart or Canadian Tire will do the trick.

the primary use of this gun will be for the highly unlikely chance that i need to pull the trigger on a bear while fishing a mountain stream. i am familiar with bear behavior and the incredible odds of actually getting attacked,but.......id rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. so in that scenario i would like the best slug for the job, i would ideally have a hot loaded 45/70 on my back but the $$$ is a little more than i got at the moment. i have a bunch of 1 oz. magnum rifled remington sluggers but was wondering if there is a option thats a little harder than them??

Welcome aboard!

Any slug will work. Not every slug works well. I have several shotguns that I (can) shoot slugs with, one gun to the next likes something different. Buy a couple brands and test them out to see what works best in your shotgun. You can shoot into a bundle of newspaper to see which penetrates best.

Word of the wise: a lightweight shotgun kicks like a mule when fired with slugs or buckshot.

i just found the " challenger magnum slug 00200 ".
does anyone have any experience with this shell ?

someone should do some chronographing with these shortie shotguns, I'm curious to see what kind of velocity they give up. Anyways, Ive got some Ballistic Products dangerous game slugs on order, Ive seen one test a guy did where they performed quite well.

Heres the review a guy did with some different slugs. I still cant find exactly what kind of material he used, some sort of green wax. Anyways, the BPI DGS 1 1/8 oz. slug penetrated 8 inches, just 2 inches less than the Brenneke Gold Magnum 1 3/8 oz. And on top of that, the BPI was going 100 fps slower and weighs 1/4 oz less.

I'll be loading some up next month

*edit* its Ballistic Technology wax

i just ordered a couple boxes of the "challenger magnum slugs" from cabelas canada.
they say
"Hi-performance rifled slugs used by many Canadian police forces. 1-1/8 Oz. rifled slug delivers incredible accuracy and a muzzle velocity of over 1600 FPS. Safe to use with any kind of choked gun. 2-3/4”, 12 gauge - box of 10 slugs."

i hope these work out well. i will post results when i get them.

I've found that hornady sst slugs fly through deer like field points (or FMJ bullets) so they penetrate REALLY well.

As for damage - sheer/pur killing machine - opens up and makes a MONSTER hole EVERY time - Winchester 385gr 3" partition gold supreme - expensive buggers though....but MAN do the animals drop when those things HIT.

try and find some German "Rottweil BRENNEKE Magnum"
No doubt about that Brenneke Classic Rottweil Slug. I used one to demise a wild boar @75 yards and it did the trick 100%.
A clean through & through smashing it's heart. Three quarter inch entry, and about a one inch exit hole.
Boar keeled over, all four pigs feet pinwheeling air for 30 seconds until he ran out of steam. I didn't even get a death squeel. Damn!

Edit: These are 'soft' recoiling slugs at around 1300 fps or so, chronographed from my 20 inch barrel.
Try Wholesale Sports in Edmonton or Saskatoon.

Here's the bad boys. 12 gauge 2 3/4, 1 1/8 ounce. Sorry for the glare.

I tried wholesale in Edmonton today, all they had was the 3" mag sluggers so I grabbed a few boxes of those for the range.

One other option is Accuracy Plus in Peterborough Ontario, and live with the shipping cost.
TSE in Calgary is currently, in the long process of importing Brenneke USA products, but NRCAN is snail slow on the rubber stamp of approval.

Trivia: Did you know the State of Alaska puts Brenneke slugs in Wilderness Firefighter survival gear? Also the Alaskan State Troopers use them for controlling problem moose and bear.
