best penetrating slug?

someone should do some chronographing with these shortie shotguns, I'm curious to see what kind of velocity they give up. .

Here's a site I found tonight that's quite interesting. There is a comparision between 18" and 14" barrel. http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=109958

some very good info there, 2.5" of penetration loss isnt bad. Whats most interesting is how the hotter 1600 fps slug broke up and penetrated less. The reduced recoil slug penetrated deeper. Ive found a manufacturer in Greece that makes some badass solid brass slugs for handloading. They are not cheap but they should beat damn near any slug out there.

I'm gonna try the 570 gr. and the 970 gr.

Any type of slug is a penetrating slug as far as I'm concerned! Muhaha but in seriousness, maybe one that is steel coated if that exists.. A question I have if anyone can answer.. Are there any slugs or sabots made out of tungsten?? Tungsten is harder than steel and heavier than lead!

Thats cool this Greek company offers reloading components, those are some slugs to shoot. I wish in similar case that ddupleks offered components for reloading, or we could buy them here, but Im more liking to reloading them myself. h ttp://www.ddupleks.lv/EN/articles/show/products

try the link I posted on page 2 of this thread and check out the Lightfield 3.5" slug test results. It fragmentated and left a giant but shallow crater in the test wax. A mere flesh wound to a big bear! Not good for killing anything bigger than a man. Ive heard of a .458 cal 500gr. tungsten bullet designed for Marlin 1895 and similar rifles in .45-70 that can be seated over a healthy powder charge and still feed in a lever action. From what I understand they are incredibly expensive though.

Ya those ddupleks are pretty nasty! And after shipping and currency exchange the ECU US-S slugs are going to cost upwards of $4 each. But its less expensive than loading a volvo into a shotshell and exhibits similar downrange performance. I plugged the numbers into an online muzzle energy calculator and it looks like the 970 gr. US-S will generate over 3600 ft. lbs of M.E. at the 1300 fps ECU claims they can be fired at within safe pressure limits. Should be fun

Check out this post I found in the Ammo forum, it should answer your questions and might even surprise you.

slug_rr_a.jpg

- Remington reduced recoil slug fired out of an 18 inch barreled remington 870.
- 30 inches total penetration into calibrated ballistic gelatin

rr_slug_14_d.jpg

rr_slug_14_k.jpg

- Remington reduced recoil slug fired out of a 14 inch barreled remington 870.
- 27.5 inches total penetration into calibrated ballistic gelatin

slug_win_1600_a.jpg

- Winchester standard foster styled high velocity slug fired out of an 18 inch barreled remington 870
- 17 inches total penetration into calibrated ballistic gelatin
- slug pancaked into a thin disk about the size of a toonie, thus greater deflection and less penetration.
- Would not want to use this slug for bear protection

brenneke_combined_tract_a.jpg

brenneke_r10_j.jpg

- Brenneke R10 fired out of an 18 inch barreled remington 870
- 25.5 inches total penetration into calibrated ballistic gelatin
- this is the slug I would want to use for bear protection (in the absence of a rifle)

Cheers,

Brobee

"Challenger Slugs" are loaded with the same so called Dangerous Game Slug that Rottweil loads. They are said to have great penetration. I can say from my own use they pass through deer and leave a big drain hole.

Here's more info I found, hope it helps.

Hey, guys, found this on another forum. Guy has a chrongraph and did the homework on a couple of different shot types.

Birdshot- 12 gauge, 2 3/4 inches, 1 oz shot
12" barrel average FPS- 1040
14" barrel average FPS- 1069
18" barrel average FPS- 1114
19.5" barrel average FPS- 1114
20" barrel average FPS- 1108
28" barrel average FPS- 1159

Then using Remington 00 Buck-
12" barrel average FPS- 1121
14" barrel average FPS- 1127
18" barrel average FPS- 1216
19.5" barrel average FPS- 1205
20" barrel average FPS- 1182
28" barrel average FPS- 1250

Is this turning into a Bear defense thread or is it about which slugs are better? If a bear defense thread is emerging there is already to many of them out there, that horse has been beaten.. For slugs, I like the Brenneke when you can find them and the Hornady SST's for their performance at range with rifled barrels.

They each have their place, sabots are used in rifled barrels and rifled slugs in smooth bore. Sabots reach out better and more accurate and rifled ones are good for a closer distance. Try some and see what works best. I've used Brennekes, Hornady SST, Federal Winchester all of them. I like the Brennekes with my smooth bore and Hornady SST for my rifled. That what works for me, good shooting.
