So I just picked up an 870 tac and I'm not super keen on the factory stock. I've always been pretty interested in a pistol grip stock for a shotgun but there's so many options! Some look pretty janky and others not so much. I think I'm pretty set on either a Speedfeed or Mesa tactical pistol grip stock for my 870.

I just want to know some of your experiences and pros and cons of the stocks out there.

thanks for any help.

Mesa is great stuff but try checking with S&J hardware through one shot tactical supply or SFRC... both are sponsoring dealers with links at the top of the page.

One thing I have noticed with the Mesa Tactical LEO adapter and Magpul AR collapsing stocks: they cannot be used together fully collapsed, as the bottom of the stock hits the base of your thumb near your wrist. This is due to the friction lock on Magpul stocks. I'm not sure if this applies to the Magpul MOE stock (no friction lock), or other AR/M4 type collapsing stocks.

I was really set on the Mesa Urbino stock but now I'm thinking 12 inch LOP is a bit too short. I really like the feel of the stock on a Benelli M2, which I thought was the same stock but turns out they're about 14 inch LOP...

Love my Mesa Tactical Urbino...:D

I considered the Urbino but they don't seem to be in stock anywhere and they're a touch pricey. Maybe I'll see one on the EE some day...

Might be sooner than you think. I'm undecided on the one I recently purchased. I was expecting a similar grip feel and position as my M1 stock, but the Urbino is very different. I think I'd sooner have a conventional buttstock installed.

Looks cool, but that's not why I bought it. I think Mesa needs to go back to the drawing board on this one.

The Urbino has a 12.5" LOP for one thing, and I wouldn't be surprised if other dimensions like "drop" are different as well.

I thought the Urbino would be the exact same at the stock on the Benelli M2, no?

So I thought.

The back of the grip is a lot squarer than the M1 for a very uncomfortable hold and the bottom corner of the grip digs into my palm.

The drop in comb if so drastic compared to the M1 that it pinches my thumb near the wrist much like the Speedfeed stocks do. The sharp angles at the bottom of the stock compound the same problem as you hold onto the grip. Why was this area not rounded off like every other buttstock on the market.

To avoid pinching the thumb, you almost have to hold the grip from the side with your fingers instead of actually gripping it. I like to be behind the grip with my hold on it, not on the side held with fingertips. I don't have gorilla hands either, but close. So maybe it's me. However, I feel if my hands were smaller. I still don't think it would be comfortable enough.

On a positive note, how the buttpad is quickly removed is a convenient idea and the way the adjustable cheek rest is held on is a good design.

Through some research, I read that the M1 rubber part of the grip is interchangeable. It's certainly not the same. Nowhere near the same. It would solve part of my issue with the more rounded rubber grip, but I have not confirmed personally that the M1 grip would fit.

Not being confident it will work, I don't want to damage either one by removing them to try. I feel I was mislead to assume the two stock's similarities. I lost interest and may go back to the REM conventional style short length of pull buttstock.

If the grip was angled less toward the rear, (more perpendicular to the bore line), it wouldn't pinch my thumb, but the sharp angles at the rear of the grip are just not what I'm comfortable with. Anyway ...

I have med size hands and the grip feels very comfortable to me....Maybe it's not good for big hands....I guess you should try to get your hands on one to test out before you buy it.....

I like my Mesa LEO with the Enidine buffer.

I have two of these setups. One on my 870 and one on my 590. Great stocks. I also have the Knoxx RRS on my other 870 and like that one as well but prefer the Mesa. I have put a lot of rounds down these. If you notice in the pic below I have a grip on one 870. Don't buy a forend with rails unless you want to use gloves all the time! I had to ad the grip to keep from bleeding everytime I take the shotgun out. :) Works great but for compactness it would be nice not to have the grip. I bought my stocks from Casey at Tacord.
