Black powder availability is scarce and has become insanely expensive, try a substitute like Pyrodex RS, works very well in cartridge firearms as well.Anyone know the best place for buying 2f powder? And also any trick to make some cartridge for the chassepot rifle? Thanks!
I was just given a pound of Swiss Black Powder this morning. One pound, unopened. I've been using Pyrodex RS for a lot of years so I don't know much about this 2Fg stuff.Anyone know the best place for buying 2f powder? And also any trick to make some cartridge for the chassepot rifle? Thanks!
Pyrodex RS is the equivalent of either 2F or 3F, I can't remember which.I was just given a pound of Swiss Black Powder this morning. One pound, unopened. I've been using Pyrodex RS for a lot of years so I don't know much about this 2Fg stuff.
I've been using Pyrodex RS in my Traditions left hand 50 cal for year. What am I missing? I have never had an issue, fairly quick ignition and every load went the equivalent of "bang." I was never told of any safety issues so please enlighten me.Proline Shooters in Calgary usually has BP

Pyrodex works fine in cap locks and cartridge rifles but should not be used in a flintlock. Its seriously scary in a flintlock.
IDCAY can speak for himself about what he's said, but the only thing I've heard about Pyrodex or subs in a flintlock, is that they need a hotter spark/temp than real BP requires, so hangfires or misfires may result. I'm curious as well.I've been using Pyrodex RS in my Traditions left hand 50 cal for year. What am I missing? Safety is first and foremost for me, as it should be for anyone.
Thanks!
Now that the misfires are part of the discussion, last time out to the range, I had a couple of shots that didn't go the first time. I thought that maybe I didn't put enough powder in the pan. It had never happened before. But, now it makes sense.IDCAY can speak for himself about what he's said, but the only thing I've heard about Pyrodex or subs in a flintlock, is that they need a hotter spark/temp than real BP requires, so hangfires or misfires may result. I hope you get it sorted. Now that the misfires are part of the discussion, last time out to the range, I had a couple of shots that didn't go the first time. I thought that maybe I didn't put enough powder in the pan. It had never happened before. But, now it makes sense.
I've never had any luck running that sh1t in my percussion guns. I dumped nearly a pound of it in the wife's garden. The roses didn't care much for it either.IDCAY can speak for himself about what he's said, but the only thing I've heard about Pyrodex or subs in a flintlock, is that they need a hotter spark/temp than real BP requires, so hangfires or misfires may result. The one time I tried it, ignition was very slow and the buildup of pressure sounded like a rocket spooling up. Basically it went:IDCAY can speak for himself about what he's said, but the only thing I've heard about Pyrodex or subs in a flintlock, is that they need a hotter spark/temp than real BP requires, so hangfires or misfires may result. I have used it in BP shot shell loads and it works fine in that. I mean I had a pound of it left after my aborted flintlock experiment turned me off it.I've never had any luck running that sh1t in my percussion guns. Next time out, I'm going to use the real black powder and see if that makes the difference. I had never had a failure to ignite until last trip to the range.I hope you get it sorted.
What you are describing seems to be exactly what the Hodgdon documentation says.... they also specifically note to not use it in a side or flintlock, with a somewhat vague reason but do specify that it is intended for cap lock and metallic cartridge use.The one time I tried it, ignition was very slow and the buildup of pressure sounded like a rocket spooling up. Basically it went:
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhtt .... BOOM! It prob took a second and a half to get to the BOOM part of the process.
During the Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhttt portion a jet of flame shot out of the touch hole. The whole thing scared the poop out of me. I tried maybe 3 or 4 shots before I'd had enough and vowed never to use Pyrodex in my flinter ever again.
I've heard of people using a duplex load, with a small about of 3F BP underneath the Pyrodex to help the Pyrodex ignite faster and more completely. However I have enough 2F and 3F to last me for quite a while. I'd need to be very desperate to even consider Pyrodex again.
