Best place to get AR10 barrel

Just wondering where the best place to get an AR10 barrel would be? I'm getting in on the Armtac Mega Arms MA10 import, and he's bringing in DPMS bolts/barrel extensions, but I can't seem to find an AR10 barrel, in either DPMS or Armalite. Would getting ATRS to make me a barrel be my only option at this point? Are there any other barrel manufacturers within Canada?

First place I would look would be Wolverine, CGN sponsor. They are an Armalite dealer and last time I checked they listed barrels. :)

Already contacted them, said they were working on sourcing some, no word on a time line. I won't be building until February/March, so I have some time, but was curious if having one made might be my best option.

You won't be able to get an Armalite AR10 barrel. They are all marked in metric ie 7.62.

That being said Kreiger, Lilja, Noveske and a few others make barrels that work with both Armalite or DPMS rifles.

Look through the sponsors for 308 AR barrels. They are out there but require some work to find them.

I've already e-mailed Questar who said they can't get just a barrel in, which I find odd since they have barrels in for other calibers, and Wolverine doesn't have them. OST only has AR15 barrels, Arm's East doesn't have them listed, but e-mailed them to check, same with TSE.

As far as I know, those are the only sponsors who regularly deal with AR parts.

see if alberta tactical can hook you up?
nothing listed but seems like the kinda guy that can make it happen

We make AR10 barrels custom as requested. At this point as we have not started to make our own version of the AR10 style rifle, we do not normally stock anything in barrels, but once the AR10 variant is in production we will be stock some barrels.

Try Epp's, Wes told me that he could get anything DPMS. I was looking at the mega arms website. They recommend that you also buy the bolt from the same manufacturer as the barrel. The various .308 AR's aren't like Ar 15's in the sense that not all parts are interchangeable between brands. Krieger told me this over the phone when I inquired about getting an AR10 barrel from them. They will only ship them unchambered or chambered to your bolt. Differances in headspacing can ruin your day.

mr. barry jensen of bits of pieces made mine. 24 inch. heavy barrel contour. i've sent him my upper n complete vault assy. then, he sent me back a complete upper. i think i've paid $600.he even have the pics in their website gallery.

Check Mystic precision for a Krieger.

You're going to have to do some calling around and most will require some chambering etc. Fireball and I are working on AR10 projects and sourcing the barrel along with lowers is the hardest part. There are alternative lowers but barrels require some leg work. It can be done but phone calls etc are going to be needed.

Suggested homework. Krieger, Lilja, Noveske.

Okay, it's getting closer to the expected ETA of the receivers from Armtac, and I have some questions.

It's looking like getting a custom barrel made is going to be my only option. Since I've never gotten a barrel made before, I'd like to ask about opinions on contour, barrel weight, etc.

I think my best bet is ATRS. I contacted Mystic Precision about Krieger and they said I could get it short chambered and get it finished here in Canada, but to get a bunch of different people working on it doesn't seem like the best idea to me, considering all the shipping costs to bounce it around to get it finished. I also e-mailed but never heard back from Bits 'n Pieces. I basically just want to ship off what I need to (bolt head, barrel extension, etc) and get someone to do the whole thing.

I had contacted ATRS awhile back when I first ordered the receivers and was put off by the cost, but the lack of any regular run of the mill AR10 barrels that I've been hunting has made their price seem a bit easier to swallow. I'm sure the barrel will be awesome, I just didn't think I was going to have to put that much into it to get one.

As far as options, I was thinking 16", but 18" wouldn't be too bad either. Are there any appreciable differences in accurate range between the 2?

For the contour, what are the considerations apart from weight? I think I read somewhere on here that a heavier barrel will take longer to heat up and therefor be more consistent shot to shot than a thinner barrel.

For an AR10 barrel, I've seen reference to .936" diameter barrels, as opposed to the standard .750". I'm assuming .750 will be thick enough? I've seen gas blocks for sale that say they're made for AR15's and AR10's, and they're .750" diameter. Is that the standard for AR10's as well?

Is fluting worth the extra cost? I don't know how much more it is, but if I'm already dumping a bunch of money into the barrel, it almost seems as though I should go all out. I'm assuming it's done for weight savings, as well as helping the barrel cool faster. Will this negate the previously mentioned "benefit" of not having the barrel heat up as fast and therefor have more consistent shots once it's fired a bunch?

First of all, ATRS barrels are a work of art. I'm running a 16" on my AR15.

Barrel length will effect the muzzle velocity, making longer shots more reachable. It has less bearing on accuracy then velocity. It depends what you want to shoot out to.

.750 is the standard gasblock size for an AR15, for a .308 I'm unsure. A heavier barrel will take longer to heat up, it'll also be more accurate because of its rigidity. But a heavy barrel is just that, more weight. For bench or prone shooting that's fine, but competition shooting a lighter barrel would be less tiring to lug around.

i am planing on a 18 inch for my AR10. i am not going to bother with a longer barrel. all the ranges around here are at most 300m. no chance of finding a nice quiet logging road to go further.

i was on the understanding that you cannot mix and match the DPMS and AR10 barrels and bolts/bolt carriers.

isn't the MA10 a proprietary system?

Fluting would give the barrel more surface area, so as to cool off faster. It will take longer to heat up being thicker, but will also take longer to cool off. The flutes help with this.
The fluting also keep the rigidity of the barrel....and of course looks cool.
Good choice with going with ATRS. Barrels is what they do.

Check out this site for ideas. I go here occasionally to drool.
Remember, your AR-10 does not have to be .308. 6.5 creedmore and of course .260 are very popular.

I'll be going with .308 because I don't reload so chambering it in an odd ball (or less common than .308 anyways) cartridge isn't a good idea for me yet. Once I do manage to get some space for a reloading setup, I'm probably going to go spend crazy on even more rifles. Really dig those PDW's a bunch of people got in 300 Whisper.
