Best platform for a 30.06 deer rifle

You can't hold onto a rifle you get online or try it out, but if your budget is a little on the tight side, Tradex up top has some nice looking 30-06 rifles for a good price.
For what it's worth also look at triggers when you're looking at a new gun, make sure it's not too heavy, doesn't feel gritty and you're comfortable with it. I tend to prefer Savage rifles for the accutrigger, but it's just like the ford vs chev comment earlier, most manufacturers make a decent hunting rifle, so pick what you like in terms of looks/feel/weight, and also what is available. The best rifle in the world isn't any good if you can't find it anywhere.

Thanks for the input everyone. It gives me alot to think about. Ihad been partial to the remington but I think that I will take a closer look at the M70 and the Sako before taking the plunge.

I think handling them is a good approach. My personal first preference would be the Sako Finnlight with a second toward the new Winchester Featherweight...either of these in .30/06 will suit your need for years.

I bought my eldest son a Sako Mannlicher .30/06 with a Leupold 4x scope back when he graduated from high school at age 17. He is now 42 and has taken a moose, a whitetailed deer and more recently an elk annually with it. His proof of accuracy lies in his following my recommendation to fire one shot a year at the same target.

To this date all shots are within a 1 inch group. Not bad.

After much consideration this summer, I picked up a 30-06 in the tikka t3 lite. I packed it through coulees and through some rough terrain after elk in September. A real joy to carry, so light. Load development was easy for this rifle too.

The action is very smooth and the adjustable trigger breaks like glass. This is my reccondation. It was a toss up between the browning x-bolt stalker and the tikka. Knowing people who had the tikka t3 and their positive experiences, sealed the deal for me.

Ive really been thinking about the Tikka in LH bolt 30-06 myself -- But i was wondering, what kind of ranges do you usually go for with the Tikka, powder burner?

One thing to consider about Tikkas and most detachable magazines is that you can't load them from the top, or at least this is more difficult. This is personal preference, and more of an annoyance at the range than field. Also the smaller ejection port makes it further difficult to single load the chamber or clear missfeeds. I personally have less interest in Tikkas for these reasons, but many still love them if these things aren't important to you. Winchester, Remington, weatherby, savage (not the axis) and sako all have large open top ejection ports that make load developing and range work a little easier for me.

I really like winchester's crf model 70's in stainless/synthetic. They have a great quality feel and trigger. They also won a recent magazine comparison test. You can't go wrong with them.

Also really like the tikka t3 sporters, but not as much, since you only can load the chamber from the mag (cycling the bolt). They are less money than the winchester crf.

The only gun that I would not want is the remington 700's, mainly because the one's I've tried have feeding issues.

Your best bet is to visit a few gunshops and try them yourself.

Wrong on only being able to load from the mag on a T3, i have loaded singles many times target shooting. The round sits right on the mag feed lips and is guided straight in.

This is so true ! I don't know where that stupid rumor started about not being able to single load a T3.
Every one I have from a 9.3 and down are easily single loaded !
