Just getting into reloading and looking for a good load for elk. I hunt west of Grande Prairie, so shots can be out to 500yds.I am using a Remington 700 XCR 300wm.

H4831SC, N560, H1000 all will work well in a 300 Win, my question is why such a light bullet? The 300 Win , especially in a 700 XCR thrives on 200 to 220 gr projectiles. Why not use the case capacity to your advantage?

Always have used 180's and have always had good luck in my 270. But want to find the best load for the 300, what would you recommend for a bullet and powder load?

The Accubond 200 gr would be a better alternative. More energy, better B.C. mush better retained down range velocity despite starting out a little slower.
Depending on what brass you use will also determine what the load is. With H4831SC or N560 you can usually find the sweet spot between about 70 and 72 grains.
Personally I use 208 gr Amaxs here, but Hornady has discontinued these in favor of their new ELD bullets, which many of us are anxiously awaiting to try.

Ever try a 210gr or 215gr Berger with some H-1000 in that remmy ? And I also agree with running a higher B.C in such a great long range caliber. I bet that remmy would love some Berger Hybrid's.

Your max load at zero is going to be seriously over pressured at 35 above. Signs to look out for would be hard to open the bolt, ejector marks in the brass, and primers deforming/cratering/popping out. It is not always at all necessary to push to max loads, start at a min in the book, and move up .5gr increments; dial in the accuracy. Your rifle will tell you were it wants to be, to be accurate, or if it even likes those projectiles and powder.

With 180 gn bullets I have attained the best velocity and accuracy with IMR 7828...........don't listen to all that BS about heavy bullets in the 300 WM, for hunting purposes within 500 mtrs you will gain nothing going to 200-220 gn bullets at the reduced velocities these produce in the 300 WM. If you step up to the Weatherby or RUM then the 200s make some sense. I have used both 180 and 200gn Partitions from a 300 WM extensively on game and can say that there is no noticeable difference, except the 200 may penetrate more.
