best powder for 45/70..

45-70 powder

I just got my first 45-70 and haven't loaded any cartridges yet. I've "experimented" with different powders on Quickload program, and IMR4227 looks very good with 350 gr bullets. That will be the first powder i try.

IMR4227 is WAY to fast for the 45-70 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! do not do use it !!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't tried 4227, but there's load data for it in Lyman cast bullet handbook (3rd edition). Doesn't seem to be a good top end powder but looks fine to me for topping out with mid range velocities.

Any cartridge can be safely loaded with powders as fast as Bullseye. Interestingly, it's the slower powders that in many cases can't be used. The 45-70 has been loaded with practically every powder from Bullseye to US869 - of course action strength and desired MV severely restrict choices.

IMR 4198, Reloder 7, H322, IMR 3031. Those are all fine for your purposes.
I have never used 4227, but I'm sure it would work with low to mid range velocity loads.

My 2 go to powders for the 45-70 are RL-7 for maximum loads (Ruger #3 with jacketed bullets) and SR4759 for black powder velocities with cast bullets (Uberti Highwall). I have heard great things about Accurate 5744 when used with cast bullets and I have a can, but have not had a chance to try it out.
