best powder for the 25-20 SS

Hey I just got a 25/20 and ordered some dies.
Was wondering about the jacketed bullets you mentioned.
I found some lead boolits online, but can you use any .257?
I guess the heavier ones would not be recommended?

And is there any factory ammo out there?
 
You'll be limited by the twist rate on that rifle if it's an original barrel. When I bought my rifle it came with a bunch of ammo loaded with smokeless. It looked like 3031 and there was waay too much of it in the case. Mine was a Stevens 44 which is a pretty weak action so I stuck with black powder.

Thanks guys will check out the web sight, also will pick up some more black horn 209,it worked good in a 45-70and 38-55 that i played around with.Also I was told that you can use jacketed bullets,but not the heavy weights.60 to 87 grain.Will see how they shoot and let every one know.

In the Single Shot Exchange Aug.02 there is an article on the 25-21 Stevens which is similar but a few tenths of an inch longer. I'm not sure how case capacity compares.

It recommended IMR 4227, IMR 4759, Accurate Arms #9 and Unique with 4227 being best at 7.9 to 8.2gr with an 81gr cast bullet. This might be considered a bit hot in your shorter case so use with caution.
 
I was just browsing through some old Handloader magazines, and found an article in the October, 1996 issue (no. 183) on reloading for this cartridge.
There is a whole page of loads (71 loads, I counted them) the powders being used were IMR 4227, IMR 4198, SR 4759, 2400, RL7, H110 and W680. Bullet varied from 60gr Hornady flatnose to 90gr Lyman cast.
You can buy back issues from the Wolfe Publishing website, both paper copies of a lot of issues, or on cd-rom of all of them. single issues are about $5 or so, plus shipping

edit.... just looked at the website, paper copy's are $10, cd-rom are $5.95. Oct, 96 issue is available in both paper and cd
