I'm getting into reloading and just wondering what powders I should start off with? my brother who;'s into reloading is going to kit me out, but any recommendations would be helpful. as well as manuals...I have a bunch of credit for books from Chapters, so that's where I'll get them from. thanks all! :D

the basic (free) Hodgins loading data manuels are great.
Personally i have had great results with "Varget" and "H414"
in loading 30-06 for my Garand
most of the listed powders will/should work fine for the average shooter.
If you are into benchrest shooting, you may have to play more with powders,
primers and bullets to tweak your loads.

IMR or Hodgsdon 4350 both work well for the heavier bullets.

IMR 4064 is great under the 165 grain bullets and lighter.

Reloder 22 is the ultimate powder for use under a 180 & 200 grain bullets. Higher velocities and lower pressures than nearly all other powders. It is a bit tricky to use though as maximum charges are quite compressed.

The powders that have worked well for me are IMR 7828-180gr Hornady, Reloader 22-180gr 200 gr Hornady , H 4831-180gr Nosler Partition.

4350, 4064, W760, H414 for bolt guns

4895, 4064 gas guns.

Pick your bullet and velocity range you want--and then work up loads from a good manual.

Up to 180 grain bullets, then I agree with most everyone here; IMR or H4350, W760 or H414. 4064 worked well with the 165's and 150's like previously reported. I had one '06 that couldn't take more than 54 grains of 4350 with 180 grains (Parker Hale). Found max in the other two at 55 and 56 grains (Springfields). So, be cautious, much depends on the rifle. I found H4831, RL19 and RL22 to be too slow i.e. needed to compress the loads too much to get equivalent velocity, but I never loaded 220 grain bullets. Maybe these powders come into their own with the heavier bullets.

All the above apply, especially 4064. Do not overlook the effectiveness of Win 748, even in a 30-06. 748 is more than just a darkhorse choice for 30-06.

Lake City match 30-06 ammo was loaded for years with Win 748, and that was ACCURATE! It flows like water through dispensers and it works. Plus it is abundant. Try it, I did and I love it.
