Best Powders for 6.5x55

H4831SC behind ELD-X 143 in the old Mauser 98 with 27.625" Carl Gustav barrel will get up over 2900 before tightening the bolt.

46g in Norma brass gives 2710 fps making one hole groups, and little recoil.

Loaded .020" off the lands gets me 3.110" COAL.

Maybe we should replace the old trigger and get her really tightened up! Cheers

Use at own risk.

You may also discover that changing the powder load by .1 grain will reduce groups from say, .7" to .2"
Barrel harmonics, there you go.

I use 4350, 4831SC and RL-22

Just started loading for 6.5x55 myself.

I'm not seeing any powder compression using H4831 so what is your reasoning behind using the SC? I use a Chargemaster so metering isn't an issue. Perhaps you are also using it for other calibres in a progressive press?

OP - same as Ganderite I have been using H4350, RL22 and H4831
Various projectiles 140, 143, 160 grain.

Is RE#19 not N204? That's what Norma supposedly uses in their factory ammo for the 6.5x55 [MRP is very close to RE#22]

How much over book max do you guys end up, if at all? IMR 4350 at max gives me zero pressure signs. I've gone 2 grains over and it still seems very safe. I know the action type is important, but assuming a strong action.

That depends on your pressure signs, how often you shoot, how many rounds in a string, etc. As long as there are no pressure signs it's more about barrel life. Unless you did pressure testing at minus 30 and go hunting in +30 which could be bad.

Best load so far out of my custom cg63 is using h100v hybrid and 140 gr hornady hpbt match bullets. Pushed the pills over 2800 fps with good accuracy. Bbl is a hart with 1 in 7.5 twist at 29.5". My data is out in the garage but I think the powder was in the 44.7 gr range.

I started with H380 because so many of my older manuals recommended it. Only recently started with different powders (4350 and 4064) both show promise. Using jacketed 139-160 gr bullets. A neighbour assures me I should be using rl22, and if I spot some I'll give it a go.

4350 is good. 4064 is too fast for best velocities. Try 4350 and something even slower, like 4831 or RL22. 4064 would only fill the case 75%.

What kind of velocitites you guys are getting with your 6.5x55 with a 140gr bullet? I've read about people going over 2800FPS but I don't see much reloading manuals that shows speed over 2800 with 140gr.
