Hi everybody, I'm new to this site and I project to buy a good pump shotgun.

I want reliability, 3.5 inch shell capability and a good fit and finish (smooth and polish finish for the barrel because i d'ont want put to much oil on it every time i'll use it).

The 870 supermag or the benelli supernova should be good choices for me but to have a nice looking barrel in the 870 ; the wingmaster model should be a better choice but don't accept 3.5 inch shells.

Have you some advices or model of shotgun to suggest me and what do you think of that bennelli supernova?

I've heard alot of good about the supernova. I found it to be bulky feeling for me.

I am an 870 fan and own a few of them. They just feel right for me and I have never had a problem with them. If the world blew up, the only thing left would be the 870's. Also, they are a breeze to clean.

What is the purpose of having a nice looking barrel? Are you just going to be trap shooting with it?

Ok thanks.

By the terms nice looking I mean that I want it to last my entire life and some of the new sandblasted barrels don't please me and should rust if one time i forget to protect the metal.

For that matter the wingmaster edition is more refine all in all I think.

But there is the winchester bps and the browning to so I'm little confuse to find the best and sweet of the lot.

But I know the 870's are probably the way to go with there 40 years (???) history.

I have heard that Remington will sell it's 10 millionth 870 this year. What does that tell you? Also IMO you don't need 3.5 in., but what do I know? My 870 has endured 33 years of waterfowl and pheasant hunting with NOT ONE malfunction!

Indeed, the point is your 870 was made 33 years ago, back when they where made good, the new ones I see around the trap range and fields these days are lacking in the same quality. I wouldn't be surprised if some day Remington goes the same route as Winchester.

It's a fact, indisputable. You don't have to like something in order for it to be a truth.
When you say "stretch" are you challenging my statement or do you simply think the 10 million sales are unjustified?
Please, prior to answering, do not confuse my new arrival here to a lack of knowledge in general.

That's a stretch.

10 million unjustified?

Certainly not, but with how North American shotguns are being built these days units sold is not often a measure of quality, and more often a measure of replace-ability.

Personally I'd pay a little more and get a Benelli Nova any day over an 870, and if my budget was restricted to the 870 realm I'd go for a Mossberg 590.

But who really cares anyway?
Get the shotgun that works for you, and your needs. :D

Just remember that although the 870 was introduced in the '50s, it was introduced because the previously made pumpgun, the model 31, was too expensive to build with all those machined, forged steel parts. The 870 was made with lots of stamped steel and castings so that it could be made less expensively. Yes, it's popular because it's durable, simple, reliable, etc. and all those other good things. But the 'best' is a very subjective question, almost impossible to answer because you haven't set any parameters by which to judge it.

All I can say is, do you really know you'll need 3.5" shells for whatever you're shooting?

The BEST pump shotgun is the Ostrender, an American four shot pump action SxS made in San Francisco.

i like my 870 tac2, but i am not sure its the best. its big and heavy even with synthetic furniture. the recoil is very managable and it puts big holes in things with very acceptable accuracy, suits me.

3.5" shells are a waste of time, money and effort.

IMHO, get a 3" gun or even a 2,3/4" gun.

I would humbly suggest the following guns in the following order:

1) Ithaca Model 37 in 3" or 2.75"
2) Remington Model 870 Wingmaster in 3"
3) Mossberg 500 or 590 in 3"

X a million!!!!! especially love the wingmasters!!!!
