Well, its official. I am now legally able to buy a Furharvester's Licence in the Province of Nova Scotia. Traps will be the first purchase, but Im also in the market for a .22, having sold off my 10/22 (no regrets there, it had its time).

So, can anyone recommend a decent model (or even the characteristics) of .22 for trapping? Im guessing there'll be alot of "Whatever's cheap and you dont mind banging up", but Im curious if there are genuinely some that fit the bill as a trapping 'tool'

I used to manage a Northern store on a Cree reserve in northern Manitoba. Part of that was buying raw fur from trappers, and selling guns. BY far the most popular gun I sold to trappers was the Henry Rifles mini bolt youth rifle. Single shot 22 that weighs about 3 pounds. As far as the trappers were concerned, it was ideal for the job. Fairly cheap too.

cz scout, very accurate, single shot or 10 shot mag if you like, light, excellent rifle, sure its a youth rifle but with a little practice anyone can sholder it and shoot very accurately out to 80 yards over 100 with faster ammo.

My advice is any bolt action (single shot or repeater) Cooey or a Chipmunk .22lr. I was looking at a Chipmunk today. It was small, light and probably weighed no more than 3 lbs.

I used to trap furs years ago and the best gun I found was a 22 cooey single shot. I could carry it all day and not feel it, strap it to the skidoo or quad any way you like and not worry about beating it up, it only cost 20.00. And if you got stuck for food for a few days, it will take down a deer if you can't find rabbits or grouse. Don't get anything fancy because it will get beaten up.

On sheer patriotism, I'd suggest any Cooey bolt action - single shot or repeater. Cheap, available, virtually disposable (registered of course).

My brother and I have a trapping territory in Québec of 335 sq. km and use an ATV/skidoo to run our three trap lines. The rifle I have been carrying for the past 15 year is a Ruger 10/22. My brother carries a cooey 64B.
I had a S & W 686 for a few years but the CFO refused to renew my carry permit last year ( reason given was dicretionnary powers). It was really handy on bears and wolves held in snares, and I did not have to load/unload each time I got on or off the ATV.
A few trappers that I know, and that still have a carry permit for the trap line, carry the Norinco M-93

I always thought that the trappers liked the leverguns too. Mostly the Marlin 39A and the Winchester 9422. Pretty reliable actions and not much weight either. Something like 15 round cap too.

OP Depending on where you trap you may be able to get a license to conceal carry a pistol if so then buy a 10 round 617 smith and wesson with a 6" barrel, still enough to drop a deer at 50 yards and will quickly dispatch anything still alive in your traps. Lucky SOB as you are one of the few that qaulify for that sacred privelege in this country. Load it with CCI segmenters and you are happily on your way.

Six bucks. Nice. Im actually considering applying for a carry permit for my future trapline, I guess I've got as much chance of getting it as I do being struck by lightning, though.

Look into the Henry .22 Levers as well. there only 300 plus tax new (i know it aint 100 like a cooey but w.e). my friend got one a while ago and loves it. It is going to be my next purchase. This was you get 15 in the tube and have a very light handy rifle that is accurate to boot. We can hit orange clays no problem out to 100m with the open sight so it will do plenty for what you need it for.
